This is a neat little video describing how vaginal birth and breastfeeding influence our immune system and our metabolism for life! Isn’t that amazing? It also touches on how vaginal birth can decrease risk of adult diseases such as diabetes and allergies.
This all has to do with something called microorganisms that exist in the birth canal and in breastmilk. They function to protect our bodies and help our immune systems recognize friend from foe in our bodies.

Breast is best

 

The research is overwhelmingly in favour of breast feeding being best for preemies, term and post-dates babies.  Moms need the support to continue doing it.  All in favour say Yay!

 

Who: 

  • WHO clearly states that breastmilk is the most important only source of nutrition from 0-6 months and maybe longer
  • Moms of infants, newborns and toddlers of all ages
  • Moms of sick infants or Sick moms
  • Someone else’s mom can provide extra milk for those moms not able to breastfeed via wet-nursing, banking, freezing
  • Dads and other moms: needed for support and commitment
  • Healthcare practitioners: be courteous and kind during this vulnerable stage showing hands-on support
  • The media: support young families and be careful not to vilify those trying to promote it.

 

What:

  • Colostrums and breastmilk are the most nourishing substances for infants and newborns.  It is full of perfect ratios of fats, proteins and carbohydrates for growing babies.  It is hypoallergenic, nutritious and provides way for mother-baby attachment and bonding.

 

Where:

  • Anywhere and everywhere breastfeeding should be encouraged and accepted
  • Women frequently report harassment when breastfeeding in public or are denied access to commercial places

 

When

  • On babies demand and mother’s intuition

  • Improves  social and biological (cognitive and motor) development of infants and newborns
  • Provides perfect nutrition for infants and newborns
  • Improves mother’s stress response, benefits mood, provides platform for nurturing and bonding with baby
  • A woman’s right to breastfeed her child is a human right. Although apparent, it is when a women wishes to exercise this right that she may encounter discriminating structures, attitudes and practices.

How:

  • With support and encouragement from all sources: Dads, other moms, health care practitioners, the media
  • 2-3 litres of water per day
  • Stress management
  • Health and nutritional status improvements such as herbal teas, homeopathy and acupuncture when needed
