Constipation in Infants – The Chiropractic Approach

Constipation in infants is a distressing time for the infant and the mother. We see this situation occur often at our chiropractic wellness center in Mississauga in infants from days old to months old. The mother has usually tried numerous methods of encouraging the baby to have a bowel movement, up to and including laxatives. In Chiropractic, we take a natural approach towards infant constipation relief.

The Chiropractic approach towards helping an infant that is experiencing constipation is to simply check the spine and nerve system for subluxations that can be interfering with the brain-gut connection. The process of checking an infant is very gentle and involves:

  • comparing the baby’s posture as he/she is lying, sitting, and being held by the mother (or father)
  • lightly touching the spine
  • visually inspecting the butt crease for asymmetry

If an infant is subluxated, they regularly have difficulty being regular with their bowel movements. When an infant is not subluxated, they have a better ability to function – including their gut.

How does a chiropractor check and adjust a baby’s spine?

If an infant is subluxated at an area of their spine, a gentle and specific chiropractic adjustment can be made. The adjustment is usually a finger contact at points in the baby’s spine or pelvis with a light pressure that is similar to the pressure that you would comfortably place on your own eyeball – very light. An activator adjusting instrument can also be used to do the specific chiropractic adjustment and has specific force levels that are adjusted to an infant setting.

Improvement in Constipation in an Infant after Chiropractic Adjustments – Report on 2016 Research Article

This is a report written by a Chiropractic patient on a research article regarding an infant who had his constipation improved following chiropractic care. Thanks the David for writing this report.

The 2016 research article is titled:

Resolution of Constipation in an 8-month-old child Following Adjustment of Vertebral Subluxation

Here is the report written by David:

A mother brought in her 8 month old son for a chiropractic consultation as her son has been without bowel movements for 5 days. The mother stated her son would strain for bowel movement but failed, leading to distress and discomfort for both mother and son. Furthermore, the baby was not given medication, only fluids.

Once sufficient information was gathered, the chief Chiropractor performed a physical examination in the child using the Gonstead Protocol. The initial testing with the Nervoscope revealed subluxation at the T9 and L5 vertebral levels. A secondary motion palpation test showed subluxation in the posterior-anterior direction at the T9 and L5 vertebral levels. Edema (fluids) was felt alongside the L5 and under the spinous process of T9.

With the information disclosed to the mother the Chief Chiropractor was ready to make the adjustments needed. Starting in a facedown position, the boy’s T9 vertebrae was adjusted using the thumb in a high velocity, low amplitude thrust towards the spine in a posterior to anterior direction. The patient was then positioned with his left side down and adjusted using a modified side posture Gonstead pull with finger contact on the patients L5 vertebrae. Shortly after the adjustments, the boy had a bowel movement while sitting in the car seat and an additional 2 more within 2 hours of the adjustments.

Also, many people don’t realize that Chiropractic is for kids too! They assume that back pain is the main focus of chiropractors – but this isn’t so! Chiropractors do touch the back, but they do so to improve the function of the spine and to reduce interference along the nerve system.  Because of the nerve system’s ability to control and coordinate they entire body, impacting the spine through chiropractic care can have amazing positive benefits for the function of your body.  Because of this I commonly will say that Chiropractic care of your spine can help you get back to your naturally healthy self again!

Resolution of Constipation and Nocturnal Enuresis in a 10-year-old Female Following Adjustment of Vertebral Subluxations: Case Study

Below are excerpts from a 2016 research article regarding constipation in a 10 year old child that was resolved after chiropractic adjustments of the child’s spine to correct subluxations.

“A 10-year-old female began to experience symptoms of constipation four days prior to her initial chiropractic evaluation. The patient’s mother explained that the pediatric patient had the urge to evacuate waste however she had been unsuccessful in doing so.”

“Utilizing the primary component of Thompson technique and leg check analysis, it was determines there were cervical and pelvic subluxations present. “

“Three days after the patient’s first chiropractic adjustment it was reported by the patient’s mother that one hour subsequent to her daughter’s adjustment she was able to eliminate all of the waste that had accumulated over the course of four days. Furthermore it was reported that the patient no longer experienced the symptoms of pain and discomfort associated with constipation.”

“Neurological symptoms of subluxation may arise due to the displacement of a vertebra, which causes the patient to experience local derangement.”
