Natural Hangover Cures

Natural Hangover Cures

Natural Hangover Cures

Dr. Aisling Lanigan was on City Line on December 29th 2014 discussing natural hangover cures.

Pounding headache? Fatigue? Stomach troubles? Keep those nasty hangovers at bay this holiday season with these natural fixes from Dr. Aisling Lanigan.

The first step to curing a hangover? Prevention! Here are a few tips to keep in mind before you start drinking:

  • Avoid sugary mixers: Too much sugar causes our blood sugar to spike, which feels great for a few minutes…until you crash! Once hypoglycemia (or low blood sugar) kicks in, our bodies are tricked into thinking we’re hungry so then we start chowing down on the cheese plate or the dessert table. The vicious cycle continues! The best mixers are water or carbonated water with a squeeze of lemon juice, not tonic water, pop or juice.
  • Try a wine spritzer: Love wine? Why not opt for a spritzer? It’ll help you to stay hydrated and slow down your alcohol consumption.
  • Eat smart before you drink: A pre-party meal filled with complex carbohydrates and healthy fats will help to line the digestive track and slow down alcohol absorption. Some key foods that fit the bill are sweet potatoes, quinoa, and avocado.
  • Pop a B vitamin: B vitamins are a co-factor needed to breakdown and eliminate alcohol from the body. They’re a water soluble vitamin, so they are further depleted when you get dehydrated. Take a good quality B-complex vitamin before a night out (and again the next morning!), and make sure to always take them with food.
  • Keep a 1:1 ratio: Have one glass of water with each alcoholic drink. This prevents dehydration (which causes the hangover headache) and slows down your rate of drinking. For even more benefits, add a squeeze of lemon to help stimulate the liver to better process the toxic by-products of alcohol.

Didn’t quite succeed in catching your hangover before it started? Try one of these 3 easy natural hangover cures:

  • Halting the Hangover Tea: Combine 3-4 slices of ginger root (ginger is an anti-emetic which helps combat nausea and vomiting), 1 bag of milk thistle tea (Silymarin, the active ingredient in milk thistle, supports liver detoxification and the metabolism of alcohol) and 1-2 cups of boiling water.
  • Hangover Hater Smoothie: Combine 3/4 cup coconut water, 1 banana, 1-2 tbsp almond butter, 1 inch peeled ginger root, 1 tbsp honey, and a handful of spinach.
  • Hydrotherapy home treatment: Shower 1 minute in hot water, followed by 30 seconds in cold water. This process widens your blood vessels and then constricts them again, and after 3 cycles of this temperature swap, your body will be buzzing as it detoxifies!

And before you go around spreading a few popular hangover myths, let’s bust a couple of the most common ones:

  • Is “hair of the dog” the best strategy? No, not quite. A lot of hangover symptoms are really just your body going through withdrawal, so by having some alcohol the day after, it eases withdrawal symptoms. Unfortunately this also places a lot of burden on an already backed-up liver, so it’s still not the best choice.
  • Is “beer before liquor, never been sicker” true? No! Your hangover is dependent on the total amount of alcohol consumed, although people who mix different types of drinks tend to drink more, and therefore experience more hangover symptoms.
  • Can coffee help you sober up? No! Caffeine is just another thing that your liver has to process, when it’s already trying to deal with an overabundance of alcohol.

IV Therapy and Cancer

Many studies regarding IV therapy and cancer have been made over the years with the following results shown:

  • Treatment with high-dose vitamin C (ascorbic acid) slowed the growth and spread of liver, colon, prostage and other types of cancer cells.
  • High-dose vitamin C with varous types of chemotherapy may be more effective than chemotherapy alone
  • Ascorbic acid with arsenic trioxide may be more effective in ovarian cancer.
  • Vitamin C combined with gemcitabine may be more effective in treating pancreatic cancer
  • Ascorbic acid with gemcitabine may be more effective in treating malignant mesothelioma cells.
  • Futhermore, IV ascorbic acid has been shown in some studies to help patients to have complete remission after a series of high dose treatments.

IV versus Oral ascorbic acid:

Some people might ask:

Why would I do IV vitamin C when I can take it orally?

The answer:

the use of high dose provides the most positive results. It is also impossible to take the same dose orally (IV treatments can range from 10 grams to 100 grams/treatment).

Examples of some studies regarding IV therapy and Cancer

High-Dose Parenteral Ascorbate Enhanced Chemosensitivity of Ovarian Cancer and Reduced Toxicity of Chemotherapy

Improving quality of life

Vitamin C for immune health and anti-cancer

2 studies show that high dose intravenous vitamin C can kill cancer cells via producing hydrogen peroxide. The discussions also highlight the following:
High dose vitamin C lowers risk of metastasis or spreading
High dose vitamin lowers tumour size
High dose vitamin C lowers inflammation and
increases the quality of life

What is Natural Health?

What is natural health?

At Erin Mills Optimum Health, “natural health” is function. It is not just about feeling good or not feeling sick. Natural health is functioning at your OPTIMUM in all aspects of life; from how your body’s physiology is working, to how you perform at home, work, and at the gym. Realize that your body has all that it needs to get to this level, it was designed to be healthy. We can help you reach that state of natural health by addressing the body from the top-down, bottom-up, and outside-in all to empower the body from the inside-out naturally.

“The doctor of the future will give no medicines, but will interest his patients in the care of human frame, in diet, and in the causes and prevention of disease.”
Thomas Edison

“Top-Down” – Your brain controls and coordinates all aspects of your body. The brain connects to the body through nerves which leave from the top (skull) and head “down” (through the spinal cord) to your body. The spine protects this cord but can interfere with the messages travelling from the “top-down”. Chiropractors check and remove this interference through specific spinal adjustments.

“The beauty about Chiropractic is the fact that it works with natural means. It puts nothing new into the body, nor does it take away any natural gland or organ. Chiropractic simply releases life forces within the body, sets free ribulets of energy over nerves, and lets nature do her work in a normal matter.”
B.J. Palmer – Developer of Chiropractic

“Bottom-Up” – You explore the world on your feet. Not only do your feet impact the mechanics of your whole spine, but they also take quite the impact when exploring. By caring for your feet our Chiropodist and Reflexologist support you towards health from the “bottom-up”.

May your feet take you where your brain wants to go.

“Outside-In” – You are exposed to daily chemicals and pollutants that your body has to detoxify, adapt to, and filter. These “outside-in” stressors need to be addressed to allow your body to reach its optimum state of function and health. Our Naturopaths are experts at taking a look at what “outside-in” stressors are challenging your body and how to support the body’s natural healing ability through foods.

Start functioning at your optimum and become your naturally healthy self – we can help.

Kids Health

Kids Health

Back to school and changes in weather can all be stressful for children and their immune systems.
Here are some tips to keep your kids healthy and happy:

1.  Vitamin D: Our sunshine vitamin is less available especially in the Fall and Winter months. The recent studies show that children should receive 400 international units (IU) of vitamin D per day. It is an essential nutrient for immune health and can conveniently come in liquid form.

2.  Sleep: Often underrated, sleep is essential for proper retention of information learned during the school day. Most children, while they are growing need 9-12 hrs/night. Make night-time routines a ritual and encourage “unplugging” from computers and phones at least 2 hours before sleep as these can interfere with unwinding from a busy day.

3.  Outdoor activities: “Nature deficit disorder” was coined by Richard Louv where he found children spending less time outdoors thereby resulting in a wide range of behavioral problems. A study done in the American Journal of Public Health found that green outdoor settings appear to reduce attention deficit and hyperactivity symptoms in children. Be an example to your children and make weekly hikes in the woods or other outdoor activities a regular occurrence.

4.  Protein: To help avoid blood sugar drops during the morning session of school, protein is an crucial part of breakfast. Keeping blood sugar stable allows for the brain to focus on learning and having fun at school. Examples are scrambled eggs, homemade granola with nuts and seeds or a protein shake with frozen fruit and protein powder (free of artificial colours, flavours or sucralose).

5.  Fun: Having fun is an essential part of learning and happiness. Developing hobbies in music, art or sports helps fine tune right and left brain equally while having a great time!

Our Naturopathic Doctors can help to advise on multivitamins for your kids and help with other issues such as recurrent colds, ear infections, trouble sleeping amongst others.

Can Natural Approaches Benefit Diabetes?

Diabetes

About 30 million people in North America have diabetes, and this does not include the millions more who are in pre-diabetes stage.

Although it is less common, type 1 diabetes occurs when your body’s immune system attacks insulin-production cells in your pancreas. Without insulin, your body cannot properly control blood sugar (glucose). Suffers of type 1 require insulin injections to balance their body sugar levels. There is currently no way to prevent or screen for type.

Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes. With this kind, the body cannot adequately produce enough insulin, or it cannot identify the insulin – which is prevents insulin from being absorbed by your body’s cells. Type 2 usually occurs in people over the age of 40, but an alarming trend is the growing rate of this diabetes among children, resulting from a rise in childhood obesity.

Both types of diabetes can cause serious and even life-threatening health problems. Diabetics are more prone to heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, nerve damage, circulation problems, and many other conditions compared to non-diabetics.

Engaging in adequate physical activity is a great idea for almost everyone, but it is especially important for diabetics. Exercise helps manage blood sugar levels, improve the circulatory system, and reduce blood pressure and cholesterol.

As it can have a dramatic impact on blood sugar balance, food plays an important role in diabetes. Diabetics should avoid foods high in cholesterol and saturated fat, such as fried foods, whole milks dairy products and fatty meats. They should also skip cookies, cakes, and pies.

As it can seriously impact numerous parts of the body, it should be no surprise that diabetes also affects musculoskeletal health. The disease is associated with joint restriction and osteoarthritis. Diabetic macro vascular disease affects large blood vessels in the body and can also interfere with the nervous system. Your Chiropractor helps maintain your nervous system health by keeping it clear of subluxations, which in turn leads to not just a healthier body buy an overall better quality of life.  Your Naturopathic Doctor can help you learn what to eat in order to assist your body in functioning at its best!  The Chiropractic and Naturopathic approaches can assist you in adding a natural aspect to your body’s health while excelling as a diabetic towards your optimum health!  What can you accomplish if you are doing better? You are worth it!
