My 40 day (39 day) yoga challenge during Detox in Mississauga

Erin Mills Optimum Health New Year New You Detox image logo

I am in the midst of doing a 40 day yoga challenge–which is all about love. It took and continues to take a lot of effort and focus. I have 11 days left and see the progress that I have made. It is truly a transformative experience. It has been a perfect time to do this as we are moving from summer to Fall. This is also an ideal time to do a cleanse or detoxification. The yoga helps to transform and move old and toxic energy.
During this period, I had one of the busiest days of practice I’ve ever had in all of my 14 years! Later that evening I had a meeting with some colleagues. By the time I arrived home it was after 11 and I thought to myself, “If I really love myself, I will bypass the yoga tonight and get more sleep–which is what I REALLY need”.
So now I joke that I am doing a “39 day challenge”. I have no regrets that I missed that day of my detox.
Anyone who has ever been interested in doing a 40 yoga retreat or other type of retreat, I highly recommend it!

Feeling Low on Energy

Feeling Low on Energy?

“Do you have anything for energy?” Is one of the most common phrases I hear from patients.  As a Naturopathic Doctor in Mississauga, it is my job to get to the root cause of why you are feeling tired so that you can be at the top of your game at home, at work or at school.

The first thing I ask my patients after they tell me they are tired is, “Tell me about your sleep?”  Most patients don’t get enough quality sleep.  Dr. Wyse ND wrote an excellent article on sleeping difficulties about how Naturopathic medicine can improve sleep quality and quantity.

If you are not waking refreshed, despite a good night’s sleep, there are other factors that need to be investigated.  Comprehensive blood work can rule out any deficiencies in iron levels and B12 or hormone imbalances such as a thyroid condition.  Blood work can also rule out a more serious underlying condition.

Poor gut health can be a reason why vitamins and minerals aren’t being absorbed properly, leading to fatigue.  Your Naturopathic doctor can get your digestive system back on track by discovering food sensitivities and improving leaky gut.

Stress can play a big role in why you may be tired.  Your stress hormone, cortisol, should be the highest in the morning, and decrease at night.  Chronic stress upsets this rhythm.  If your body remains in a constant state of stress, your cortisol levels stay high.  This can disrupt sleep or deplete your adrenal glands causing a constant state of being “tired but wired”.  Making sure to add in recovery time to your exercise routine and daily regime is important.

Certain medications can deplete essential nutrients such as B12 and CoQ10.  Your Mississauga Naturopathic Doctor can speak to you about how we can support the side effects of your conventional medications.

After getting to the root cause of why you are tired, your Naturopath can offer diet and lifestyle advice as well as herbs and supplements.  We also offer B12 injections and intravenous vitamin infusions.  The injections and IVs are able to give you high doses while bypassing the stomach.  Since the dosages can be much higher than in an oral form, most patients notice results much quicker.

Thanks to our Mississauga Naturopathic Doctor Ashley Chauvin for writing this article for us on how she addresses patients who complain of low energy levels!

Taking Care of Yourself! Self-Care in Mississauga

Self-Care in Mississauga!

“An empty lantern provides no light. Self-care is the fuel that allows your light to shine brightly.” -Anonymous
Taking care of yourself is extremely important!  ‘Self-care’ is the term we use to describe this effort.  Self-care is essential when trying to be your best when caring for and helping others!
Here we have Dr. Ashley Chauvin giving an IV Myers’ cocktail to fellow Naturopathic Doctor, Olivia Chubey. Being a birth doula and Naturopathic doctor can take a toll on the immune system and adrenal glands. An IV of vitamins and minerals will go directly into Olivia’s bloodstream and nourish these parts of her body that need a boost. She has decided to take time away from her packed schedule to relax and get treatment from a colleague.

Having Difficulty Sleeping?

Having Difficulty Sleeping? How Naturopath’s Address Sleep Concerns.

SLEEP….what a difference a good night of rest can make.

Did you know that Naturopathic Medicine can address sleep concerns?

Sleep is a major pillar of health & wellbeing. If you have ever woken up after a long, restful sleep you understand how fulfilling a good night’s sleep can be. The whole world looks bright. Sleep can heal and revitalize. During sleep the body:

  • Repairs tissue, including heart and blood vessels
  • Supports learning & memory through memory consolidation
  • Balances hormones for growth and fertility, hormones for hunger and satiation, along with the hormones responsible for blood sugar balance. (How are your hormone levels?)

Sleep debt on the other hand is detrimental to health.

In 2011 a study at the University of Laval University found that 40.2% of Canadians have some form of sleep disorder. The most common is insomnia and that prescription medications remained the most widely used therapeutic option. (Morin CM, et al. Can J Psychiatry. 2011)

What happens to us when we lack sleep?

Stress on the body, fatigue, weight gain, cognitive decline, inflammation, hormone imbalances, infertility, insulin resistance, diabetes and a lowered immune function.

Sleep depends on hormone function and there are numerous variables that impact proper hormone balance. These include foods and sensitivities, toxins, artificial light, stress, etc…

What can we do today to help with sleep?

Begin with some sleep hygiene:

  • Go to bed at the same time every night (preferably before 12midnight)
  • Spend at least 30 minutes outside during the day to align yourself and hormones to the natural rhythm of the sun
  • Exercise/Practice Movement before 1pm
  • Avoid caffeinated beverages after 1pm
  • Eat high protein/high fat food a few hours before bed
  • Dim the lights in your home a few hours before bed to prepare your body to sleep
  • Reduce blue lights from computer & devices at sunset with a special program or by wearing blue blocking glasses in the evening
  • Take a soothing bath before bed (include Epsom salts or sachet of soothing herbs)
  • Practice meditation, prayer, deep breathing

What is a Naturopathic Approach to Sleeping Problems?

It is a Naturopathic principle to address and treat the cause of any disorder. Ascertaining the underlying cause of sleep disturbances will help to guide treatment. Generally, insomnia is caused by stress and tension, however, in some cases it may be caused by allergies, menopause, hypoglycemia, nutritional deficiencies, anxiety, asthma, digestive issues, pain, skin conditions, acute infections, coughs & colds, overwork.

In developing your individual plan, a Naturopathic Doctor has the ability to use a number of modalities:

  • Hygiene: the implementation of a sleep hygiene plan & support
  • Nutrition: blood sugar regulation, food sensitivities, vitamins to support hormones responsible for sleep
  • Herbal Medicine: a number of these herbs may be chosen on their own or in combination by your Naturopathic Doctor to be used as tea or tinctures to take before bed:
    • Matricaria recutita (Chamomile) a gentle nervine for children & adults.
    • Eschocholzia californicum (California poppy) a mild sedative and sleep promoting herb
    • Valeriana off. (Valerian) especially for muscle tension causing sleep disturbance
    • Passiflora incarnata (Passionflower) a sedative indicated for overwork, mental worry or nervous exhaustion
    • Nepeta cateria (Catnip) a gentle sedative and diaphoretic
    • Humulus lupulus (Hops) a stronger sedative to be used short term, or dried in a sleep pillow
    • Piper methysticum (Kava kava) reduces anxiety and imparts calm
    • Hypericum perfoliatum (St. John’s wort) helps chronic insomnia and
  • Acupuncture & Auricular Treatments: works to remove blockages to organ systems impacting the ability to sleep
  • Homeopathic remedies & UNDA numbers: gentle remedies often prescribed based on an individuals specific case
