What Do Chiropractors Do?
Chiropractors are specially trained to locate and correct misalignments in the spine that can create stress on the nerve system. The misalignments causing nerve stress are referred to as vertebral subluxations.
Some people assume that Chiropractors only help people having lower back pain or neck pain, but many people are discovering that Chiropractic services can have many more amazing benefits. You can learn about your first chiropractic visit here, or continue reading more below to learn about how taking care of your spine and nerve system can help you live better!
“Better Back = Better Health”
“life is different now that I feel better”
Approximately a year ago, a chiropractor at Erin Mills Optimum Health saw a gentleman in his 60’s who came to seek care for a very persistent lower back problem that affected his hip and leg. It had interfered with most activities in his life, one of which was his passion…cricket. After a few months of chiropractic care, he returned to the game and to his surprise was able to play when he thought his days of playing his beloved game were over. In addition he was able to join his teammates to go play in a tournament in Argentina, which was a thrill of a lifetime for him!
He admits that without chiropractic care none of that would’ve been possible for him. Chiropractic care can change your life if you’re living with pain. Chiropractors can also address some of the injuries and pain points listed here.
A result for one patient may not be typical of all patients. Our aim is to help you have an excellent experience at our Mississauga office and to help you reach your health goals.

Chiropractic Moves You Towards Your Naturally Healthy Self
Back Pain Can Be:
- Disabling – It always surprises patients how disabling back pain can be. The spine is a very important part of the body and when it is not functioning well and hurting, everything is difficult!
- Irritating – Irritation is very common with back pain while you are healing. With the proper help it does get better, but one step at a time like all processes.
- Annoying – Back pain is very annoying. The bad days do get better with the proper care.
- Painful – Back pain is definitely painful!
- Debilitating – Back pain can feel debilitating or weakening. The spine is the foundation for many movements of the body, and if it is in trouble the whole body is very weak. The back also protects the nerves and spinal cord which supply muscles with the impulse to fire. If those nerves are bothered, the power is lost from that muscle area.
- Hurting – Back pain definitely hurts. The pain often starts off dull but builds up until you can’t ignore it hurting any longer. Seek help as early as possible.
- Stabbing – Stabbing pain is definitely the type of pain to avoid. The body is trying to tell you not to do that movement. Examine why the stabbing pain is occuring.
- Cramping – Cramping pain in the back is common and the underlying cause needs to be determined.
- Exhausting – Pain in the back is exhausting. Whether from the healing experience, pain, or from the lack of sleep.
- Fatiguing – Fatigue is a common thing we see in patients who are having pain. It does improve once the injury is addressed correctly.
- Frustrating – Every injury takes time can heal and can be very frustrating at times.
What Is The Big Idea When It Comes to Chiropractic?
But back pain is only a part of the back problem. Realize that your back bones and muscles protect the spinal cord, which is the wires that leave your brain! That is why back problems can have such a large impact on not only how you feel, but how your entire body is functioning! And that is why the Chiropractic services we offer in Mississauga can have such a large impact on improving your back pain, but also help your body to function like your naturally healthy self again.
Getting your focus towards function and healing is part of the BIG IDEA of Chiropractic, but there is more! Check out the video below and ask us more to learn more about the Big Idea of Chiropractic.
A big part of how Chiropractic care can help you become your naturally healthy self has to do with your brain (the central nervous system). Your brain is the most important part of your body! It controls and coordinates all aspects of your body, including your muscles, movements, organs, immune system, and the expression of your genes. The brain connects to the body through nerves which leave from the ‘top’ (skull) and head ‘down’ (through the spinal cord towards your lower back) to your body. The spine protects this cord but can interfere with the messages travelling from the “top-down” impacting your brains ability to communicate its messages. When this biological communication system is interfered with, your body’s ability to be naturally healthy is greatly reduced. Chiropractors focus on this problem in order to help you get back to your naturally healthy self.

Vertebral Subluxation and Chiropractic
Below is an excerpt from an office brochure on Chiropractic from Fred H. Barge, D.C., Ph.C. titled “Healing Takes Time | Be A Patient Patient.” It has a great explanation of what a vertebral subluxation is, how it can affect your health, and how a Chiropractor can adjust it to help the body heal:
“Thirty one pair of nerves emit from the spine, they communicate with every organ and tissue in the human body. When a vertebrae is out of line for a period of time, distortion of it’d supporting structure occurs. The tendons, ligaments, discs, muscles, all must adapt to the malposition. Inflammation sets into the tissues of the vertebral joints, chemical products of inflammation, swollen tissues and bony malposition, all contribute to nerve interference. Now, if the vertebral joints of the spine were a ball and socket joints, they would wither be located correctly or dislocated. For instance, your shoulder is a ball and socket type joint, but the joints of the spine are sliding articulations. If a vertebral joint dislocates, the results are disastrous, paralysis can ensue. Fortunately, this does not happen without severe trauma. What commonly happens is that these joints subluxate, become misaligned. When a Chiropractor adjusts the joint, it often takes repeated adjustments to get the joint to assume a better position. Once this is achieved, the joint must stabilize, the inflammation subside, and the nerve must heal before normal nerve supply is restored. Once the nerve supply is normal, then the tissue served by this nerve must heal and return to normal function before symptoms begin to disappear. After the adjustment, the vertebral joint is not stable and must be checked to see if it needs another adjustment. The nerves and tissues are still vulnerable and weak and may elicit some re-occurring symptoms and occasional bouts of the original problem. Healing takes time and health usually returns in cycles; in other words, it has its ups and downs. A return to complete normal function and strength sometimes takes months and in severe cases, years. The miracle of our body took nine months of creation in the womb and another 18 years to become fully grown. “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and “Healing Takes Time.””

Yes, chiropractic treatment is covered under WSIB in Ontario. There are programs of care specifically designed for back pain, musculoskeletal injuries, and shoulder injuries. Our Mississauga office is able to help you recover your best in order to help you return to work. WSIB will help you cover the cost of your care with certain parameters. To determine what those parameters are it is best to consult with the Chiropractor in order to see if your case is a Chiropractic case and then coordinate that with WSIB. Our Chiropractors will do their best to help you recover from your work injury and return to work.
Chiropractic treatments, including adjustments, are both effective and safe. Chiropractic is widely recognized as being one of the safest conservative, drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for a wide variety of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions. The risk associated with Chiropractic treatments is less than that of many common pain and anti-inflammation medications. The risk of serious injury from Chiropractic care is estimated to be one in four million, which means that you are more likely to be hit by lightning four times before you are seriously injured by a Chiropractor. Interestingly, new patients at a Chiropractic office are very surprised to see how gentle and specific a Chiropractic adjustment actually is. Chiropractors are specially trained to identify and gently correct misalignments in the spine called subluxations. Chiropractors have to go through specialized training programs for four years after graduating from university. If you have more questions regarding Chiropractic treatment, the best thing to do is to contact the office to meet with a Chiropractor to discuss your individual case and concerns.
Many of our patients are referred by their family doctors, but as Chiropractors are primary care health practitioners you do not need a referral. Another way to describe Chiropractors is that they are primary contact health care providers. If you are looking for ways to refer a friend or family member to our office for chiropractic services, the process is simple – Contact us and our helpful front desk staff at Erin Mills Optimum Health will coordinate a time and details of information in order to connect with the Chiropractor.
Yes, chiropractic is covered by most employee health benefit plans. Check with your individual plan to determine if your insurance plan will cover your chiropractic treatment. Keep in mind that work-related injuries are covered by WSIB, and that automobile insurance will pay to help you recover from injuries that are caused by motor vehicle accidents. Your personal health benefit insurance is used first prior to the motor vehicle insurance being used. If your insurance coverage does not cover the entire cost of your chiropractic care, keep in mind that chiropractic care is not very expensive! In fact, when comparing cost-effectiveness for health challenges like back pain, chiropractic is one of the most cost-effective ways to address a back problem, and stop it from resurfacing. Check out the Manga report on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of chiropractic management of lower back pain. Our patients also consistently show high satisfaction rates with chiropractic care and its benefits.
