Fertility influenced by acupuncture and diet
Whether you’ve just started trying to conceive or are well into your journey toward parenthood, Naturopathy can apply therapies at every stage.
Dr. Kirsten Almon Naturopathic Doctor in Mississauga at Erin Mills Optimum Health
Q: My husband and I have been having trouble conceiving for 1 year. Do you think and Naturopathic Doctor could help?
As a Naturopathic Doctor, I help many couples who have had trouble with their fertility for many years find success.
The health of both partners is taken into consideration. If testing is required, we are able to send for hormonal analysis, sperm analysis, as well as other markers including anti-mullerian hormone testing.
- Nutritional advice
- Acupuncture to support ovulation and hormone balance
- Supplemental program to encourage optimal sperm and egg function
- Herbal and homeopathic support for stress management and energy
Acupuncture has a long history of use in the treatment of promoting healthy menstrual cycles in women to enhance fertility.
The concept of acupuncture is based on the concept of yin and yang and energy moving through channels called meridians. When energy or “qi” is not moving freely through these meridians, vitality may be weakened or blocked. This can manifest in many ways; infertility, difficult or stalled labour and postpartum depression for example. The strategies used to ‘unblock’ these channels are to needle, add pressure or use moxabustion over specific points on the body. Once the technique is administered, it allows the body to overcome the blockage and i.e. enhance fertility, quicken and improve contractions in stalled labour and improve mood.
With respect to treating a patient with concerns of fertility, the May 2006 issue of the medical journal Fertility and Sterility presents several new studies that confirm the efficacy of acupuncture as an aid to In-vitro fertilization (IVF).
Not only does acupuncture work on an energetic level, it has also been shown to change chemicals in the brain, aiding in labour and postpartum care:
“There is evidence that acupuncture influences the production of and distribution of a great many neurotransmitters and neuromodulators, and that this in turn alters the perception of pain.”
-David Eisenberg, M.D., Clinical Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School
The following concerns have been shown to respond favourably to acupuncture treatments:
- Man and Female Infertility i.e. endometriosis
- Aids in turning a Breech Baby
- Post dates Pregnancy to Initiate Labour
- Stalled Labour
- Painful Labour or Dyspareunia
- Postpartum Depression
- Return of Menstruation
- Libido Enhancement
Resolution Of Infertility Following Subluxation Based Chiropractic Care
This 2015 study highlights the life changing event of a patient conceiving after being medically diagnosed with anovula infertility. The Chiropractic care appears to be a catalyst in this patient becoming pregnant. The case report highlights how severe her spine and nervous system was subluxated, which the authors postulate was from previous and recent physical traumas. Once these subluxations were addressed with a care plan including specific Chiropractic adjustments, the patient became pregnant.
This type of story is inspiring to many as up to 1 in 4 women are affected by infertility. (Gunnell. Infertility prevalence, needs assessment and purchasing. Journal of public health and medicine. 1994; 16: 29-35.)

Promote Fertility Naturally – Dr. Aisling on City Line
We are very proud of Dr. Aisling Lanigan’s performance today on City Line. She did a great piece on natural ways to promote fertility!
Dr. Aisling starts with nutritional components near the beginning of the show and then does a second part on exercise / acupuncture later on in the show.
If you’re in the baby making business, there are a couple things you need to know. Our expert Dr. Aisling Lanigan tells all (even the most embarrassing stuff!) about what both women and men should be doing and eating to increase their chances of healthy fertility.
What to do:
First rule of thumb: Know you ovulation cycle. Cycles can vary depending on the person, and most women do not know when they ovulate. Most will ovulate about halfway through their cycle, but for those who cannot tell, use these indicators:
- Take your temperature (oral or auxiliary, such as your armpit) — it will increase when you’re ovulating. This spike will be very small, but this is the prime time for fertility.
- Cervical mucus. If it resembles an egg white, you’re ovulating.
- Count the days. If day 1 is the first day of your period, day 13 is roughly around the time you will be ovulating.
- Ovulation strips. Similar to a pregnancy test, women will be able to determine if they are ovulating by urinating on the strip.
Bottom line: Ovulation = baby making time!
What to eat to help increase fertility:
- Dark fruits: Dr. Aisling recommends darker fruits (and dark veggies!) for their antioxidants and large role in alkalizing your body. Turns out sperm are drawn to alkaline, and therefore your body will act as a magnet.
- Essential fatty acids: Omega 3 is key and can be found in all sorts of oil, avocado, ground flax, and fish — especially sardines and anchovies. The trick is to stock up your body with omega 3 before becoming pregnant. This can assist with your baby’s brain and heart development.
- Leafy greens: Kale, spinach, and Swiss chard are great — particularly for men!
- Fibre: The best source of fibre happens to be lentils, but it’s good to eat a variety of fibre sources. Choose lima beans, chickpeas, and all the colours of lentils for some options. Fibre is important as it collects all the extra hormones, cholesterol, and unwanted junk we don’t need in our body.
- Protein: It’s important to have a protein source with every meal. If you’re a vegetarian, try out quinoa for its essential amino acids. For the women who need their meat, a boneless, skinless chicken breast will work wonders. Protein is crucial as it balances your blood sugar levels which will regulate ovulation — which we all know is how babies are made.
- Zinc: This one is for the fellas. Zinc is essential for balancing testosterone, sperm development, etc. Dr. Aisling recommends oysters, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds, as great ways to up your zinc intake.
- Iron: This is the number one most important nutrient for women to have in their bodies in order to ovulate properly. Iron can be found in lean cuts of red meat, spinach, lentils, and kidney beans.
Bottom line: Eat a balanced diet! This is important for both women and men. It takes two to make a baby and it takes two to make it healthy.
One of the most exciting parts of my job is when a patient gets pregnant–especially when we find out in my office in Mississauga! I feel very blessed and lucky to be working with women and men on their journey to conception.
In working with individuals, I am always 100% hopeful that they will get pregnant and that it is only a matter of “when”. Along this journey, I encourage women to be aware of their energy, mood, digestion, sleep, cervical fluid and cycles. Ideally, they should feel at their personal best when they conceive. If one of these is out of balance, it typically is a message from the body that something needs to be rectified first.
Here at Erin Mills Optimum Health we provide hormonal testing through saliva and blood, along with blood testing for fertility markers, thyroid function and vitamin and mineral analysis. We also offer acupuncture, herbs, supplements and homeopathic remedies to balance the body and promote optimal fertility.
Stayed tuned for more tips for fertility in future blog postings!

Ask the Naturopathic Doctor about your Fertility question
Q: Dear Dr Almon
My wife and I are currently trying to have a baby. We’ve been trying for 5 months and have been unsuccessful to this point, which is somewhat frustrating! Currently we are looking at all of our options and thought that a Naturopathic Doctor might be able to give us some ideas. Thanks!
Answer from Dr. Almon:
I understand that you and your wife are becoming frustrated. Here are some questions for you:
- Are your wife’s cycles regular?
- Are you both aware of when she is ovulating (tracking changes in cervical mucus)?
- When she takes her temperature, is she noticing a peak temperature at mid-cycle?
- Has your sperm been analyzed?
If there is a “no” answer to any of these questions, we can further investigate what needs to be addressed i.e. if the cycle is too long (>32 days) or too short (<25 days) this may have an impact on your wife’s fertility.
- Also if there is a history of smoking for either partner, this can also play a role in fertility.
In a visit with a Naturopathic Doctor, all of these questions would be explored and more with respect to nutrient status (example, some minerals are very important for sperm production and motility), health history and examination.
Can’t Get Pregnant and Don’t Know Why?
Did you know that Celiac’s disease is commonly undiagnosed and can be a cause of unexplained infertility in women?
Some signs and symptoms of Celiac Disease are:
- alternating diarrhea and constipation
- iron deficiency and other mineral deficiencies
- B12 deficiency
- poor teeth and bone strength (also osteoporosis)
- joint pain
- mouth sores
If you have a number of the following and are also having significant challenges getting pregnant, please book in to see one of our Naturopathic Doctors to be assessed with health history and blood work.

Resolution of Infertility in a Patient with PCOS, Hypothyroidism, and Ulcerative Colitis with Chiropractic Help
Resolution of Infertility in a Patient with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Hypothyroidism, and Ulcerative Colitis Following Subluxation-Based Chiropractic Care: A Case Report and Selective Review of the Literature
Below is the abstract from this research case report that summarizes the story. This Chiropractic patient had an amazing recovery from many different disease conditions while undergoing chiropractic care, and was able to have children after regaining her health.
“Objective: To describe and discuss the management and reasoning for the resolution of a 30-year-old female with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), hypothyroidism, uncreative colitis and an eight year history of infertility.”
“Clinical Features: A 30-year-old female presented with a chief complaint of neck pain and ulcerative colitis. She had a history of three motor vehicle accidents, once during her childhood, once while in high school and then again in 2006 to which she attributed her neck pain. During the history, it was revealed that she was also diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2004 and with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in 2005. She underwent two years of conventional fertility treatments consisting on Metformin, Spironolactone and Clomid without success. In 2008 she was diagnosed with uncreative colitis which she managed with medications.”
“Intervention and Outcome: Paraspinal therapy, static and motion palpation, and leg checks were utilized locate and monitor nervous system dysfunction and vertebral subluxation. The patient was adjusted with Diversified chiropractic technique over an eight month time period. The patient monitored her own ovulation after five months of care and discovered that she was ovulating again for the first time in eight years. The patient was able to successfully get pregnant after eight months of care on the reportedly first unprotected attempt at conception.”
“Conclusion: Chiropractic adjustments, resulting in reduced vertebral subluxations, appear to have benefited a female who was previously anovulatory. Reduction of vertebral subluxations may have a relationship to improved female fertility and the ability to achieve pregnancy. More research on chiropractic care, infertility and PCOS is warranted.”
Below are some excerpts from this research study along with some of my comments – Dr. Callum Peever
“The goal of a diversified adjustment is to restore motion to previously hypomobile joints.”
“The patient was assessed twice a week and was adjusted according to chiropractic parameters indication specific vertebral subluxation listings.”
“Over the ten months of care the patient was adjusted a total of 45 times. She received adjustments to one to three spinal segments per visit.”
“The patient was continuing care for the purpose of health and maintenance.”
“The patient continued to receive maintenance chiropractic treatment during the duration of her pregnancy.”
-Continuing with good habits and behaviours is very important when encouraging your body to adapt and heal. This chiropractic patient made a commitment to her health and didn’t resort back to her old habits.
“A search of journals with McCoy Press produced 38 documents using the keyword, “infertility”.” “The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, and Family Health contained 12 articles, and the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research contained 13.”
-These research studies are great to read to understand the complexity of the issues regarding infertility as well as to gain confidence in the body’s ability to adapt, heal, and reproduce.
Resolution of Infertility Following Chiropractic Care

Resolution of Infertility Following Chiropractic Care for Vertebral Subluxation: A Case Study and Review of the Literature
Objective: This case study reports on an infertile female patient who successfully conceived following the introduction of chiropractic care. The related literature is also reviewed and summarized.
Clinical Features: A 24-year-old patient presented for chiropractic care with a chief complaint of back pain and a 3.5- year history of infertility with infrequent progesterone induced menstrual cycles. Physical examination findings included postural abnormalities, paraspinal muscular tenderness, myospasm and vertebral subluxations.
Interventions and Outcomes: The patient was managed for vertebral subluxations through specific chiropractic care with the use of Diversified and Webster techniques. Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) and therapeutic exercises were also applied during the course of care. The patient noted that on the ninth visit that she had her first normal menstrual cycle since the start of chiropractic care and that by the twelfth visit she was pregnant.
Conclusion: The patient in this case had a 3.5-year history of infertility. After twelve chiropractic adjustments the patient conceived. Chiropractic care may play a key role in women’s reproductive health. More research on this topic is warranted.
