More on Chiropractic and Ear Infections

The below case that is described in the 2017 research paper involved a 1 year old who had chronic ear infections which resolved after Chiropractic care utilizing an Activator instrument and protocol to adjust subluxations in the young child's spine and nerve system.  Read and ask questions! Chiropractic Care of a Toddler with Otitis Media Born Premature & Exposed Prenatally to Opiates and Amphetamines: A Case Study & Selective Review of Literature (2017) Abstract Objective: To describe the benefits of chiropractic care in a 13-month-old male child diagnosed with otitis media, a history of prematurity and prenatal exposure to opiates and amphetamines. Clinical Features: A 13-month-old male presented with complaints of otitis media. He was born premature and delivered through cesarean section and a vacuum was used for extraction. At birth his blood contained opiates, methamphetamine and other amphetamines. The patient had been experiencing bouts of otitis media since three months of age and had previously been managed by medical doctors with rounds of antibiotics and nasal saline. Chiropractic analysis revealed subluxations were located in the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacroiliac joint region when analyzed and were adjusted using the Activator Adjusting Instrument (AAI). Intervention and Outcomes: The patient was assessed checked utilizing thermal scanning, Activator Methods technique and adjusted using an Activator Adjusting Instrument (AAI). The patient was checked and adjusted where vertebral subluxations were found and the mother reported that the child’s otitis media had resolved the following week. The patient continues regular chiropractic treatment and has not been on any antibiotics since 13-months of age. Conclusions: This case report illustrates the resolution of acute otitis media symptoms in a pediatric patient while under subluxation-based chiropractic care. It is recommended that the link between subluxation and visceral dysfunction, such as acute otitis media be investigated further. From this study I found an interesting connection that readers may enjoy regardint the connection of the upper neck with the ear through the nerves and spinal chord: Ear Pain. Differential Diagnosis and Management fot the Chiropractor: protocols and algorithms by Souza: "The spinal nucleus of Cranial Nerve 5 is the primary nerve involved in patients with otitis media. This spinal nucleus merges with the dorsal horn at C1 through C3 in the trigeminocervical nucleus."

New Research Sheds Light on Hearing & Ear Infections

Chronic Ear Infections, Failed Tympanostomy Tube Surgery and Resolution Following Chiropractic Adjustment of Vertebral Subluxation.

Below are some excerpts from a 2016 research paper from the journal of pediatric, maternal and family health on chronic ear infections titled; “Chronic Otitis Media, Failed Tympanostomy Tube Surgery and Resolution Following Adjustment of Vertebral Subluxation.”

Our Chiropractic assistant in Mississauga enjoyed reading the article and felt that it should be shared with our patients.  She wished that she had known that Chiropractic adjustments could have helped her daughter with her chronic ear infections (otitis media) so that she could have minimized her daughter’s use of antibiotics throughout her early childhood.

“Ear infections, often recurrent and frequently associated with visits to the doctor and antibiotic prescriptions.”

-This is unfortunate as the CDC (Center for Disease and Control) is making big efforts to decrease the amounts of antibiotics that are being used in our society.  Antibiotics can be useful in emergency situations to prevent death, but are detrimental to healing and health in many of the situations that they are used in our North American society.  They are even leading to further problems.  No one wants to run into situations where antibiotics are used, but when somethings hurts a person wants to help. Unfortunately, antibiotics are not appropriate in many situations.  One of the CDC campaigns, which includes ear infections, was “snort, sniffle, sneeze … no antibiotics please.”  Read more into it from all angles and realize that the Chiropractic approach to increasing body function and performance can help when suffering with challenges such as ear infections.  Read on to see it in this case of a young boy.

“Current medical guidelines of a “wait and see” approach to the disorder seems wanting by parents. Antibiotic prescriptions is still high in most countries and inappropriate antibiotic prescribing poses a significant challenge in primary care.”

“Benefits of analgesia, improved sleep, decreased irritability or better demeanor has been reported by parents with children under chiropractic care.”

-This is one of the most common things that we hear from parents regarding their children that are under Chiropractic care.

“A four-year old male, chief complaint of otitis media, [which] began at age 3. The patient had tympanostomy tubes inserted in his ears that fell out nine months later. With follow up consultation, the ENT specialist wanted to schedule another surgery due to fluid retention in the patients ears. It was then that the patient’s explored alternative care approaches. With less than a month prior to the scheduled surgery, the patients mother presented her child for chiropractic care.”

“Based on history and physical examination findings, the patient was provided with a working diagnosis of otitis media associated with vertebral subluxations at vertebral C1 and C2 and T7.”

“On the first visit, the patient received chiropractic adjustments (CMT) by the use of and Activator instrument.”

-The Activator Method Chiropractic Technique is my favourite Chiropractic adjusting Technique and is the one that I utilize in my Mississauga Chiropractic office – Dr. Callum Peever

“The patients care was set at a frequency of two to three times for the first two weeks, followed by once a week for eight weeks for a duration of 12 weeks.”

“Initially, the patient responded well to care after the first adjustment with relief lasting for over a day.”

“[The mother] said he was sleeping better and was in a better mood following his adjustments. After the first two visits, the patient’s mother stated that he was no longer tugging on his ears and his nose was no longer runny. The patient’s mother also stated that his sleeping habits had improved. On the third visit, the patient’s mother stated that she had cancelled the surgery that was scheduled…”

It is amazing that something like a Chiropractic adjustment, which entails no drugs or surgery, can have such a large impact on a child who is struggling with ear infections.  If your child is having difficulty, a Chiropractic check up is a great first step!

Resolution of Chronic Otitis Media after Multiple Antibiotic Attempts – Review of Case Report

This is a review of a 2016 case report in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health that discusses the experience that a mother and her 2 year old daughter had while suffering with recurring ear infections.

We see these situations in our Chiropractic office in Mississauga very often.  Usually the parents have tried multiple antibiotic attempts with no long term success and are now looking for an alternative approach towards the problem in order to avoid surgery on their child.

Resolution of Chronic Otitis Media, Constipation & Sleep disturbance Following Adjustment of Subluxations in a 2-year-old Child

“Frustration at reoccurring ear infections is one reason some parents are driven to seek “alternative” treatments for their children.”

“Symptoms correlated with otitis media in children are numerous and can include: ear pain, difficulty sleeping, excessive crying, increased irritability, difficulty hearing and responding to sounds, loss of balance, fever, draining from ear, headaches and loss of appetite.”
-The child is often tugging or rubbing at their ears, and the ears can turn red due to the irritation of this problem.

“Chiropractic is unique in that its goal is to correct spinal subluxation, normalize spinal biomechanics, remove neurological interference and allow the body to heal itself.”
-The Chiropractic approach is to address the mechanical aspects of the spine that can be impeding with the ability of the body to function.  One way to describe the mechanical aspect of ear infections is to remember that when changing pressure on a plane, by chewing gum you can get your ears to “pop”.  Realize that the jaw, ear, and first vertebrae of the neck are all located very closely together anatomically.  The all move and function together to create the perfect environment for your body… or they get “stuck” and create the perfect environment for the “bugs” that like to live in your ear!  Fortunately, a chiropractic exam is very specific and can determine if the neck, jaw, or skull can be contributing to the problem!

“The chiropractic care utilized in this case included elements of multiple techniques, as well as instrument-assisted adjustments via the Integrator.”
-There are many ways to adjust a spine.  In Mississauga we focus our skills on the Activator Methods Technique as well as traditional hands on mechanical adjusting.

“A mother presented her 2-year-old daughter for chiropractic care with the goal of avoiding a prescribed bilateral myringotomy. The daughter had a history of recurrent earaches with associated fevers. On the first visit, the mother detailed a history of regular antibiotic use. She had visited both her pediatrician and ear-nose-throat specialist earlier that month, and was cleared of ear infection only to have another to follow shortly after.”

“At the time of the physical exam, patient was suffering difficult bowel movements that were restricted to one movement per week and also reported fitful sleep, walking multiple times throughout the week.”

“hiropractic palpation, performed via MC2 analysis, revealed dysfunction in the upper cervical spine, specifically areas of spasm and hypomobility (or restriction) at the C1 on the right posterior aspect.”

“Chiropractic care began on a schedule of three visits per week for four weeks, with a reassessment scheduled to occur after 12 visits.”

“This patient was re-evaluated on three separate occasions. After 14 visits approximately one month later a re-examination was performed to assess the patient’s response to care. The patient was reported to be sleeping through the night. The patient also had not had an ear infection for the five weeks since she had been under care. Bowel movements increased to 2-3 per day, and the patient was reported by her mother to have a happier disposition since she began chiropractic care.”

“A second re-examination was performed on the patient’s 26th visit, to re-assess the patient’s response to care.  Tylenol and antibiotics had not been needed since the first chiropractic visit.”

“A final re-assessment was performed two months later, the patient’s 36th visit, at which point she was reported to be of a happy disposition, and still antibiotic and Tylenol free. Her ear infections had resolved completely with no further recurrence since beginning chiropractic care.”

“Factors such as overuse of antibiotics, drug-resistant microbes, ineffective drug therapies (especially in recurrent cases), as well as poor drug reactions, make chiropractic care a front-runner for alternative interventions, as it is gentle, non-invasive, and provides lasting resolution by addressing cause rather than symptoms.”

Epilepsy Seizure Disorders Chiropractic

Epilepsy / Seizure Disorders and Chiropractic

Below are exciting research articles that can give hope to people who have epilepsy or seizure disorders.  It highlights the importance that the spinal cord and spine can have on seizures.  Read the articles below and become curious.  If you have questions, ask!

Medically, there are many pharmacological and invasive strategies to attempt to reduce the episodes –

But what can be done naturally to support a child with epilepsy or seizure disorders?

Chiropractic care is a great way to naturally support a person with epilepsy or seizure disorders.

How does Chiropractic support a person with Epilepsy or seizure disorders?

Chiropractic care aims to support the body naturally by reducing interference on the nervous system that is created by the bones of the spine. When interference or irritation of the nerve system is reduced with the help of specific Chiropractic adjustments the body has a better ability to function. This is beneficial in children and adults who are living with epilepsy or seizure disorders as it is a neurological problem that is greatly affecting function in the nerve system.

How do I know if there is nerve interference created by the bones of the spine?

A nervous system that is irritated and interfered with is not always painful. Many times the body simply has a difficulty functioning and can go haywire. For that reason, a Chiropractic exam is important.

A Chiropractic exam will help to identify areas of the spine that can be interfering with the nerve system. These areas are called vertebral subluxations. If there are vertebral subluxations, a plan will be created that aims to reduce the nerve interference by addressing the subluxations – supporting the body towards a natural state of health.

Epilepsy and seizure disorders: a review of literature relative to chiropractic care of children. Pistolese RA

To review the currently available literature regarding chiropractic care relative to patients with epilepsy, particular emphasis being placed on those who have epilepsy as children.

The Index to Chiropractic Literature was searched for the years 1980 through 1998 through use of the keywords epilepsy and seizure. The MANTIS database was searched for the years 1970 through 2000 through use of the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) keywords chiropractic, epilepsy, seizure, and child/children. In addition, a MEDLINE search of the literature was performed for the years 1966 through 2000 through use of the same subject headings.

The present study reviews 17 reports of pediatric epileptic patients receiving chiropractic care. Fourteen of the 17 patients were receiving anticonvulsive medications, which had proven unsuccessful in the management of the condition. Upper cervical care to correct vertebral subluxation was administered to 15 patients, and all reported positive outcomes as a result of chiropractic care.

Chiropractic care may represent a nonpharmaceutical health care approach for pediatric epileptic patients. Current anecdotal evidence suggests that correction of upper cervical vertebral subluxation complex might be most beneficial. It is suggested that chiropractic care be further investigated regarding its role in the overall health care management of pediatric epileptic patients.

Chiropractic care and Epileptic Seizure improvement

The spine has a large connection to the spinal cord which can impact a person’s brain neurology.  Below is a research report on a case where a patient’s chiropractic care was able to help her improve her epileptic seizures. Incredible to see the power of an adjustment to improve a young lady’s life! – Dr. Callum Peever

Resolution of Chronic Epileptic Seizures & Improved Cervical Curve Following Chiropractic Care: A Case Report

“Objective: The purpose of this case study is to consider the effectiveness of chiropractic care on a young female with a case of epilepsy.”

“Clinical Features: A 21-year-old female presented with epilepsy that had plagued her for over a year. She claimed to suffer from two to three seizures a week while on a high dose of an antiepileptic drug. She lost 50 pounds and developed depression, anxiety, migraines, allergies, severe fatigue and memory loss.”

“Intervention and Outcomes: The patient underwent chiropractic adjustments along with traction, wobble and head weight exercises used by Pettibon practitioners. She received diversified high velocity spinal adjustments to reduce her subluxations that were found using x-ray analysis and palpitation. The patient reported a change in her symptoms after two months of care with a cessation of all seizures after six months.”

“Conclusions: Diversified chiropractic adjustments paired with cervical traction, wobble and anterior head weights seem to provide beneficial relief for a young female suffering from epilepsy. Research on chiropractic and epilepsy is limited and it is recommended to further research the connection between the two.”

“Due to the limitations in the effectiveness faced with antiepileptic drugs, alternative methods are being used globally to gain control over the seizures. These alternative methods include changes in diet, increase in exercise and a decrease in stress.”

How a subluxated spine can impact epileptic seizures

A subluxation is when a bone in the spine is misaligned and creating interference on the nerves.  This can have large impacts on how the brain and body are able to function, as seen in this case.  Fortunately, by addressing these subluxations in the spine the interference on the nerves can be reduced and function improved.  Read further to see how the researches connect how a subluxated spine can impact epilepsy, and how a chiropractic adjustment can help.

“Because the patient experienced seizures in the temporal lobe, a theoretical model can be proposed of the connection between the adjustment and its effect on the temporal lobe. During an adjustment, muscle spindles, golgi tendon organs, and mechanoreceptors become activated. The information can be sent through the spinothalamic tract.”

“Kent suggests that biomechanical dysfunction caused by a subluxation can alter the signals sent by these nociceptors and mechanoreceptors. The premise of this theory is that an altered input can lead altered output or dysponesis. The most basic definition of a vertebral subluxation is a misalignment of the vertebra that causes interference in the nervous system.”

“An alteration of the message sent from these receptors to the brain via spinothalamic tract can cause altered reception according to the dysafferentation theory. Altered information can cause hyper-activity of the tract that would be interpreted ad a hyper-responsiveness sent to the temporal lobe. This hyper-activity of the temporal lobe is seen in those with temporal lobe seizures.”

“A case of a 23-year-old female suffering from grand mal seizures was presented. The patient’s symptoms improved shortly into care and resolved completely six months into care. Her condition was improved under Diversified and Pettitbon chiropractic care while also using cervical traction, wobble and anterior head weights. The purpose of this paper was to hypothesize a connection between vertebral subluxations and temporal lobe epilepsy.”

hypothyroidism and chiropractic research article

This is one of the first studies I have seen regarding chiropractic care impacting a woman’s hypothyroidism.  I enjoyed reading it and am excited to share my favourite points with my patients in Mississauga.

The chiropractors who reported on this patient’s case did an excellent job reporting the patient’s presenting symptoms, reason for presenting to the Chiropractor, history, exam findings, and outcomes through care specific chiropractic care.

I have since read another study regarding Chiropractic care and improvement in a patient’s thyroid function.  The summary and link from this 2018 research study is at the end of this blog.  Enjoy and stay curious!

Some highlights from the research article on chiropractic impacting a patient’s hypothyroidism condition are:

“Thyroid deficiency is the number one endocrinological condition seen world-wide. It is a disease process characterized by arthralgia, cold intolerance, constipation, depression, difficulty concentrating, dry skin, fatigue, hair thinning, hair loss, memory impairment, menorrhagia, myalgia, weakness and weight gain.”

“Despite hegemonic support for current methodologies of care, there is a recognised consternation regarding the number of hypothyroid patients whose thyroid assays have been medically managed to a modicum of stability, yet report continued signs and symptoms of thyroid dysfunction.”

“many patients report malaise and dissatisfaction with their treatment protocol’s management of their symptoms, a limitation of hormone therapy’s inability to account for metabolic demands.”

“…while in the US the cause is more often chronic autoimmune thyroiditis or hashimoto’s thyroiditis.”

Case Report highlights:

-44 year old women
-presented to the chiropractor for shoulder and neck pain from a car accident 23 years prior
-the patient suffered from multiple concussions in her past
-the patient had been medically managed by an endocrinologist for 4 years with a diagnosis of Hashimoto or Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

Chiropractic examination highlights

“…deviations from this ideal increase risk factors for spinal health.”

“Digital thermography has been found to have a high degree of validity … in measuring capillary dilation, which is hypothesized to provide a metric for autonomic nervous system function.

“SEMG is a determination of paraspinal muscle activation, and it provides objective data regarding muscle hypertonia.”

Chiropractic impression

“Chiropractic subluxation was assessed in C5/6/7 segments”

“These metrics suggested a considerable dysfunction in the patient’s ANS.”

“The patient was adjusted at C5/6/7 levels”

“One month into care, the patient presented to the office in a manner not previously seen by the attending chiropractor. The patients teeth were chattering, and her hands were shaking in a way different then seen during episodic periods of her essential tremors. The patient described herself as feeling “flush and jittery””

“The chiropractor suggested that the patient schedule a consult with her endocrinologist. Upon doing so her lab tests revealed that her TSH levels had dropped into hyperthyroid parameters. The endocrinologist suggested reducing Armour Thyroid intake from 90mg once daily to 60mg. the patient was compliant with the recommendations of her endocrinologist and subsequently felt relief of symptoms.”

Subluxation Model

“In the case of the patient with the hypothyroidism, it is possible that the patient’s 80.7% loss of cervical lordosis played a significant role in her inability to properly regulate her own thyroid function.”

“Bringing the patient’s cervical lordosis closer to an ideal alignment would then alleviate stresses caused by alterations in conformation, which produce thyroid autoantibodies, and thus relieving thyroid tissue from autoimmune insult.”

I encourage you to read the entire research article and I hope that it grows your curiosity as to how a properly aligned spine can impact the body’s ability to adapt and heal!  To read more on the topic of thyroid health, check out this blog by our Mississauga Naturopathic Doctor.

Report On Resolution Of Failure To Thrive In Infant With Chiropractic Care

Failure to thrive (FTT):

“Failure to Thrive (FTT) is commonly defined as either a weight for the age that falls below the 5th percentile on multiple occasions or a weight deceleration that crosses two major percentile lines on a growth chart.”

“In more than 80% of cases involving FTT, no known underlying medical condition is ever identified”

Resolution of Failure to Thrive in a 4-month-old infant following adjustment of subluxation: case study and selective review of the literature – Dr. Neally and Dr. Alcantara

Resolution Of Failure

Highlights from the case report:

“A 5-month old diagnosed with “failure to thrive” “

“Began at two months of age and was taken to her pediatrician”

“Medical recommendation to the infant’s mother was surgical insertion of feeding tubes. (i.e., gastrostomy) into her child’s stomach. It was then that the infant’s mother sought alternative care approaches. “

“Umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck at birth”

“The child’s parents were extremely concerned about their baby’s health and wanted to avoid the gastrostomy surgery.”

Chiropractic exam

“Spinal palpation revealed subluxation and decreased range of motion at the C1-C4 functional spinal units (FSU’S) and at the T3-T4 FSU.”

Chiropractic care for this child

Activator methods and diversified technique were used to specifically adjust the child’s spine

Probiotics were suggested to aid in the recovery of the gut flora

“Following the child’s first chiropractic visit, the infant’s mother reported that her child slept a few hours continuously”

“The infant’s color returned”

“Given the positive response to chiropractic care, the infant’s parents elected not to have their child undergo the gastrostomy surgery.”

“Long-term follow-up revealed a healthy developing 5-year old who has met all developmental milestones and is enjoying good health.”
