Empowering the birth experience

Many women have different experiences during the birth process--it is always my intention to have my patient's be as prepared as possible during their pregnancies for labour.
Some of the Naturopathic modalities I use are monthly acupuncture visits, handing out tasty recipes to help optimized their nutrition while nourishing their babies as well as herbal and supplement recommendations as needed. Along the way once they are into their 2nd trimester, it is an ideal time to do a prenatal class-here at our Mississauga health clinic we offer HypnoBirthing.
Here is a great video on what a hypnobirth looks like along with information on how relaxation can decrease pain and fear and help with a positive birth experience
Our next HypnoBirthing class is beginning in 1 month. Call our clinic to sign up today!

HypnoBirthing ® Principles

One of the principles behind HypnoBirthing is the "law of psycho-physical response" meaning, for every thought or emotion there is a corresponding chemical and physiological response within the body.
This can look like the following if someone is perceiving fear:
When a labouring mother perceives fear, this will cause adrenaline to surge and oxytocin to drop-->the problem with this is that it will cause labour to not only slow down or stop altogether, but it can also increase sensation of pain.
When a mother feels calm, it will change from fear to this:
The goal of HypnoBirthing is to facilitate a sensation of calm and confidence in the mother.
Some amazing examples of evidence-based HypnoBirthing outcomes:
*  fewer cases of pre-eclampsia
*  decreased use of oxytocin
*  decreased need for C-section
*  shorter first and second phase of labour
*  lessened or eliminated need for analgesia
*  babies with higher than average APGAR scores

Preparing for the Big Day--BIRTH!

Today one of my appointments is meeting with a couple to discuss how they can best prepare for labour. I LOVE these appointments. This is such a major event, and not one to "wing". Preparing for labour takes time and practice: Practicing relaxation is one of the best ways to get ready for birth.
Since we teach and are certified in HypnoBirthing, this is also something that I really encourage women and their partners to experience. Having done this is my own labours, I feel like it was the best fit for me as it really helped with anxiety leading up to the due date.
Breathing is another excellent coping strategy during labour. Making sure to take long slow breaths through the nose can actually help diminish the sensations as the surge or contraction comes and goes.
I'm looking forward to highliting these topics as well as leading mom and partner through a relaxation script.
If you are pregnant or looking to get pregnant, we are more than happy to help you in your journey! We have very experience Naturopaths who have worked with enhancing fertility and pregnancy for years!

Keep Calm and HypnoBirth!

flowers in vase to represent calmness during birth
If you are pregnant and looking for a wonderful class to prepare you, your birthing partner and baby for a calm and safe experience, this class is for you.
Taught by 2 Naturopathic Doctors and Birth Doulas, the instructors will teach you about how to prepare your body for labour including diet and lifestyle tips.
All to often, women are exposed to birth as a fearful and painful experience. It does not have to be this way! This class will teach how to do self-hypnosis and promote relaxation that you will be able to do during labour.
A recent study titled Hypnosis for childbirth: a retrospective comparative analysis of outcomes in one obstetrician's practice highlights benefits of hypnosis during birth as follows:
  • significantly less use of sedatives, analgesia, and regional anesthesia during labor
  • higher 1-minute neonatal Apgar scores

Men and Birth

Men and Birth

Did you know that men only started to be present in the labour room in the 1960s?

Partners or husbands of the birthing mother can offer a lot of support that can help the labour progress smoothly and calmly.

Unfortunately, there are some birth classes and health care practitioners that don’t share enough knowledge with the male partner on how they can contribute most positively to the process.

Let’s talk about what happens when mom/dad to be are relaxed:

When a women is relaxed during labour, the hormone oxytocin surges. This is considered to be the ‘hormone of love’ and very helpful to support babies descent and birth.

When a man is relaxed during labour, his testosterone soars. How is this is enabled is if he feels like he is contributing and participating in supporting his partner.

On the other hand, if the male partner is present but not participating, this boost in testosterone does not occur. Men have reported post-partum feeling, “leftout, emasculated and powerless”. These feelings lead to the drop in testosterone and increase in adrenaline.

How does this affect the labouring women?
The famous midwife Ina May Gaskin has explained that all indigenous people know that when a woman is in labour, she can pick up on fear in a room, that fear and adrenaline is “contagious”.

So–for the male partners out there—learning about massage, hot/cold water during birth can be very helpful for the labouring mama. When he feels empowered, she will feel relaxed.

There are also some wonderful birth classes and Naturopathic Doctor doulas — right here at Erin Mills Optimum Health that can help you best prepare for the big day. Contact us today.

Acupressure and Labour

Acupressure and Labour

Having a baby is one of the most life changing experiences of a woman’s life. Labour is a beautiful, sometimes challenging and amazing process. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is optimizing a woman’s health during pregnancy to have her at her best for the labour process.
There are many ways to support a labouring mama–one that has been studied over and over again is the use of acupressure. By applying pressure at specific points, the intensity and feeling of pain or panic can dramatically be decreased. I have taught partners and have supported moms using this technique with wonderful results. Not only is it effective, but it also empowers the birth partner to know what to do! One partner copied all the of the points on cue cards and memorized them to and from work on the go-train. When labour day came, he felt confident with his knowledge and was able to help his wife much more.
To learn more about Acupressure, connect to us in Mississauga or read on at this link to Dr. Betts website–she is a licensed acupuncturist and PhD who teaching midwives acupressure for labour.

Birth Breastfeeding And The ‘Bugs’ Video Comments From Our Mississauga Naturopath

This is a neat little video describing how vaginal birth and breastfeeding influence our immune system and our metabolism for life! Isn’t that amazing? It also touches on how vaginal birth can decrease risk of adult diseases such as diabetes and allergies.
This all has to do with something called microorganisms that exist in the birth canal and in breastmilk. They function to protect our bodies and help our immune systems recognize friend from foe in our bodies.
Check it out!

Breast is best

The research is overwhelmingly in favour of breast feeding being best for preemies, term and post-dates babies.  Moms need the support to continue doing it.  All in favour say Yay!

  • WHO clearly states that breastmilk is the most important only source of nutrition from 0-6 months and maybe longer
  • Moms of infants, newborns and toddlers of all ages
  • Moms of sick infants or Sick moms
  • Someone else’s mom can provide extra milk for those moms not able to breastfeed via wet-nursing, banking, freezing
  • Dads and other moms: needed for support and commitment
  • Healthcare practitioners: be courteous and kind during this vulnerable stage showing hands-on support
  • The media: support young families and be careful not to vilify those trying to promote it.

  • Colostrums and breastmilk are the most nourishing substances for infants and newborns.  It is full of perfect ratios of fats, proteins and carbohydrates for growing babies.  It is hypoallergenic, nutritious and provides way for mother-baby attachment and bonding.

  • Anywhere and everywhere breastfeeding should be encouraged and accepted
  • Women frequently report harassment when breastfeeding in public or are denied access to commercial places

  • On babies demand and mother’s intuition

  • Benefits mom and baby
  • Improves  social and biological (cognitive and motor) development of infants and newborns
  • Provides perfect nutrition for infants and newborns
  • Improves mother’s stress response, benefits mood, provides platform for nurturing and bonding with baby
  • A woman’s right to breastfeed her child is a human right. Although apparent, it is when a women wishes to exercise this right that she may encounter discriminating structures, attitudes and practices.

  • With support and encouragement from all sources: Dads, other moms, health care practitioners, the media
  • 2-3 litres of water per day
  • Stress management
  • Health and nutritional status improvements such as herbal teas, homeopathy and acupuncture when needed
  • We carry a herbal blend that helps to increase milk supply if needed, please call asap if you require Lactaid.

Mothering The Mother With Doula Care In Mississauga

Mothering The Mother With Doula Care In Mississauga

As a perinatal naturopathic doctors, we encourage the woman and her partner to become educated throughout the prenatal period regarding the many choices there are surrounding childbirth – primary caregiver, location, intervention, immediate post partum procedures and post partum care.  We can counsel the family in these decisions and educate the partner in ways in which he/she can best support the New Mom in pregnancy, labour and post partum.

Women who have the additional support of a woman during their actual labour, report positive outcomes as indicated in many research papers and books.  This role of “Mothering the Mother” is called a Doula.

One of the most special and unique parts of my job includes being a Naturopathic Doula, offering birth support to the mother. I’ve been very lucky to be a doula for many of my patients as well as I’ve had 2 wonderful doulas support me at the births of my babies.

What did you like best about having a doula?

What I liked best about having a doula present at my birth was that she was there for me 100%. All of her focus, care and kindness was there to support my journey in birth–I felt more confident and comforted. It was amazing!

What are the benefits of having labor support from a doula?

  • 50% reduction in the cesarean rate
  • 25% shorter labor
  • 60% reduction in epidural requests
  • 40% reduction in oxytocin use (for induction or augmentation)
  • 30% reduction in analgesia use
  • 40% reduction in forceps delivery
  • Has NO adverse effect
  • Fewer episiotomies
  • Improved neonatal outcomes
  • Better mother-infant interaction
  • Greater maternal and paternal satisfaction

Information was obtained from Mothering the Mother: How a Doula Can Help You Have a Shorter Easier and Healthier Birth, Klaus, Kennell, and Klaus (1993).

Our Naturopathic Doctors are available to be on-call for support during the labour and birthing period. They provide continuous, uninterrupted care for the laboring woman and her partner, and help mothers participate fully in their experience by offering physical and emotional support and information about the birth process, available technology and alternatives in order to make Informed Decisions about the birth of their child(ren). Their attendance at a birth can also facilitate the partner in better supporting the labouring/birthing woman.  As well as providing assistance using the modalities such as Homeopathy, Acupuncture, and Herbs for concerns that may arise during labour or birth; i.e. stalled labour, malposition, hemorrhage.

Birth is an extremely intense experience – physically and emotionally.  We want to encourage the partner’s role in the process as well as enhance the experience for the birthing woman and baby.  A safe, loving, gentle environment for the new baby to enter is ideal.

If you or someone you know are pregnant and are interested in having a trained professional be there for mom and partner, please contact our Mississauga wellness clinic today.

Our Mississauga Naturopathic Doctors Dr. Aisling Lanigan and Dr. Kirsten Almon are trained and experienced Doulas as well as certified HypnoBirthing Practitioners.
