With this warmer weather our patients get out of their hibernation and get back to all the activities that they were missing. I had the opportunity to walk the parks in Erindale, Mississauga with my wife and our 5 week old daughter this weekend and it was incredibly refreshing. This is one of the first times that the weather is not in a state of “extreme cold warning” that we felt comfortable strolling outdoors with our newborn. Not only were we getting a breath of fresh air, but there were countless of other people in the neighbourhood doing the same. I hope you are able to get out for a breath of fresh air as well! As our weather in Mississauga comes out of the “extreme cold warning” we start seeing puddles again. Spring Back to Health in Mississauga

SPRING: A Time for Cleansing, Purification, Healing & Fertility

This is from a presentation that Mississauga Naturopathic Doctor Tiffany Wyse did for Goodness Me Mississauga in the Spring of 2017.  For questions and to implement these Naturopathic strategies, connect to Dr. Tiffany at Erin Mills Optimum Health.

mississauga naturopath Tiffany presenting on Spring health strategies

The spring equinox occurred on Monday, March 20th, 2017. It falls on either the 19th or 20th of March every year and marks the beginning of spring in the Northern hemisphere.

This is the season of new life on Earth. New growth, cleansing water, green.

Signs of Spring in Nature:

  • Rain, rain and more rain.
  • We begin to see worms emerge from the earth.
  • Birds singing
  • The colour green permeates our surroundings
  • Early flowers blooming: crocus, forsythia, wild garlic, fiddleheads

What Does Spring mean to us?

  • cleansing,
  • a time of purification
  • a time of healing
  • a time of renewal, regeneration, rebirth and resurrection
  • a time of fertility of the Earth (Ester/Easter/Estrogen)
  • For us, the season can stir the uprising of vital energy. As the sap begins to rise in the trees, so our inner fire stirs and ascends in the spring.
  • As this energy rises we can dislodge any of the sluggishness we have felt over the winter hibernation period and rejuvenate ourselves.
  • Spring is an opportunity for self-growth where we may connect with our true nature.
  • Organ focus for SPRING: LIVER
  • Activity: CLEANSING

In Spring, we shed the weight of winter, we shed our winter parkas and we naturally eat less or may even fast to cleanse the body of the fats & heavy that we have been ingesting over the winter months.

Spring is a time of ascension and expansion where young shoots push out of the ground.

Food Preparation in Spring

Food preparation in Spring may be very simple, like the fresh, new greens growing.

Spring as a season represents youth.

Raw and sprouted foods may be emphasized although be cautious if you do not have enough digestive fire.

In cooler climates or for those with digestive deficiency, sautéed foods (cooked for a short amount of time but with more heat) is a better choice.

We want to eat foods containing spring vitality.

Five Element Theory

According to Traditional Asian Five Element Theory SPRING & the WOOD Element are associated.

ORGAN: Liver

TIMES:    Liver 1-3am

Gallbladder 11pm-1am

SOUND: Shouting

ODOUR: Rancid

SENSE: Vision

The Liver in Health & Harmony

When the liver is harmonious there is little stress or tension.

In our modern age the liver is probably the most congested of all of the organs in our bodies. With exposure to countless chemicals, intoxicants, denatured foods and fats, the intricate biochemical functions of the liver are put to the test and oftentimes overloaded.

This extra pressure on liver function disrupts its energy. It can become obstructed, overheated or stagnant resulting in both physical & emotional concerns.

Signs that the Liver is out of balance (disharmony)

Emotional: anger, jealousy, frustration, impatience, irritability, rudeness, edginess, violence, aggression, impulsive/explosiveness, mood swings, resentment

Physical: abdominal bloating, headaches, migraines, breast distension, nausea, belching, poor digestion, constipation, dry mouth, insomnia, dizziness, tinnitus, night sweats, fibroids, menstrual pain, PMS

What to eat?

Try to have a meal of some form of wild green to kickstart the change of season:

Wild leeks (ramps)

Add lemon juice and olive oil to bring out the minerals and for absorption.

Other fresh greens include:

Burdock root

Black radish

Flax seeds to assist with bowel function.

Grind and sprinkle on foods.

Bitters before meals

Use Tumeric (Curcuma longa) as a spice.

TONICS for the LV

Dandelion root (Taraxacum off. radix)

Burdock root (Arctium lappa radix)

Yellow dock root (Rumex crispus)

Berberis aquifolium (Barberry)

Chelidonium (Chelidonium majus)

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum)

Sarsparilla (Root beer)

Increase the intake of raw foods with any increased of signs of warmth inside the body

Include Dry Skin brushing as a part of your daily routine.

Take walks in nature.

Take a fast from the media & negative stories.

Spend time in peace & quiet. Allow for contemplation of the new life that has begun with the new season.

THANK YOU for joining us!

Happy Spring!

snort sniffle sneeze - no antibiotics please

Snort Sniffle Sneeze No Antibiotics Please

Antibiotics were once hailed as a miracle drug, but are now widely misused and overused.

Antibiotics used incorrectly are bad for your health and are leading to “super bugs”.

The Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention (CDC) has a large media campaign to decrease the use of antibiotics in society. The campaign is titled “Snort Sniffle Sneeze, No Antibiotics Please”. I will highlight the main points from this campaign and then grow your understanding further towards a naturally healthy state.

Here are some of the main points from the Snort Sniffle Sneeze, No Antibiotics Please campaign:

  • Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections. Antibiotics do nothing for viral infections.
  • “Cold or Flu, Antibiotics don’t work for you.”
  • Viral infections cause most of the snort, sniffle, and sneezes. (Most coughs, colds, bronchitis, sinus infections, and sore throats as well as some ear infections).
  • Using an antibiotic for a viral infection will NOT cure the infection, will NOT help you feel better, will NOT keep others from catching the illness.
  • Most sore throats DO NOT require an antibiotic.
  • Green colored mucus is NOT a sign that an antibiotic is needed.
  • Some ear infections DO NOT require an antibiotic.

When used incorrectly antibiotics can be harmful to your health:

  • Antibiotics kill good bacteria in your child’s body, which may lead to complications, such as diarrhea or yeast infection.
  • Cause a serious allergic reaction that may require hospitalization.
  • Result in an antibiotic-resistant infection. Resistant bacteria are stronger and harder to kill. They can stay in your child’s body and can cause severe illnesses that cannot be cured with antibiotics. A cure for a resistant infection may require stronger treatment–and possibly a hospital stay.

Check out the CDC campaign brochures yourself: Antibiotics aren’t always the answer CDC PDF Know when Antibiotics don’t work CDC PDF

Here is a video message from the CDC that is entertaining and gets to the point that if you are having Snorts, Sniffles, or Sneezes, then say No Antibiotics Please!

The video has some great suggestions beyond avoiding the improper use of antibiotics. It goes on to offer some suggestions such as:

  • Sooth a sore throat with ice chips, sore throat spray, or lozenges (but don’t give lozenges to young children)
  • use a moist cloth over an ear that hurts
  • to help relieve a cold, use a clean humidifier, a cool mist vaporizer, or breath in steam from a bowl or shower.

Unfortunately, the CDC’s antibiotic campaign falls short of growing your understanding beyond just avoiding antibiotics.

Time to grow your understanding further.

health presentation in Mississauga no antibiotics please
Dr. Peever and Dr. Tiffany presenting this topic in Mississauga at Goodness Me.

Medicine has oversold treatment and undersold the benefits of caring for the body.

This ad campaign is the CDC addressing this problem in society. The problem that I see with it is that they stop short of addressing the benefits of caring for a body. They do mention numerous ways to address the symptoms associated with these snorts, sniffles, and sneezes. But they don’t go into ways of supporting or encouraging the body to function better towards a naturally healthy state.

What is caring for the body?

Did you realize that your body is the greatest drug store on earth? Your body knows which drugs to use, when to use them, and how long to use them for! Your body is also constantly and actively monitoring your internal and external environments for risks and opportunities to rest and heal. When you cut your finger, what heals it? The body does using its amazing, inborn, natural, innate ability to heal! Caring for your body involves supporting and encouraging your body’s amazing, inborn, natural, innate ability to heal. This amazing, inborn, natural, innate ability is coordinated and controlled by your brain and nervous system, and is what Chiropractors are experts at caring for.

Here are some questions to consider when growing your understanding of fighting infections and natural health:

  • Why doesn’t everyone get sick or catch the flu?
  • Why doesn’t everyone get sick at the same time?
  • Why doesn’t everyone get sick for the same length of time?

Dr. Stacy Larson has a great way of addressing these questions “The Flu – Why Doesn’t Everyone Get It?”

That darn flu bug is going around again. It has been spotted driving north on the highway as well as through many local communities. Now, if we could just get the license plate number of the car and apprehend that pesky varmint, we could stop him in his tracks. This is a common perception about the flu virus. It’s “going around.” It’s flu season. There is some truth to the statement that the virus is more prevalent at some times than others but why doesn’t everyone get sick? or at the same time? or for the same length of time? Let’s look at the factors that determine our strength in fighting off health challenges like the flu. First of all, viruses and bacteria are opportunists. This means that they do not attack you. It doesn’t catch you in some desperate race. It can only take advantage of you if your defenses are weak. Our bodies weaken and breakdown when there is more stress than it can handle. The three types of stresses are physical, chemical, and emotional. An example of physical stress would be poor posture or a slip on the sidewalk, chemical stress could be overeating or too much caffeine and emotional stress could be caused by the recent world events or balancing your bank account. The key to being healthier is to constantly build our bodies so they are capable of dealing with these stressors effectively. The most obvious ways of maintaining or improving your health are regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate rest and a positive outlook on life. Often overlooked is maintaining a healthy spine and nervous system. A properly functioning spine and nervous system builds a healthier you by maximizing the effects of frequent exercise, good nutrition, proper rest and a positive mental attitude. By consistently working on your health, stress does not weaken your body as quickly or as much as it may have before. This helps explain why some people get the flu, why some don’t and some don’t get it as bad as others. If viruses and bacteria were the only cause, shouldn’t we all get it at the same time and with the same severity? Start your “flu season” off by building your health today. Remember that a healthy, subluxation-free spine will improve the quality of messages going through the nervous system, enabling you to do everything you do better. Get your spine checked today so that pesky flu bug has less of a chance of “catching” you! -Stacy Larson, D.C

How can you support or encourage the body to function better towards a naturally healthy state?

Dr. Larson hints at a few of the ways above but I will re-write them here:

This has been the Erin Mills Optimum Health approach for over 35 years, and Chiropractic’s for 119.   Our natural approaches don’t treat the common cold. They do, however, help raise your natural resistance to disease, which is the only “cure”. Natural resistance is the only reason why colds “go away” rather than last for weeks, months, or entire lifetimes!

Chiropractic care helps raise your natural resistance to disease by removing a serious interference to your natural healing ability: spinal nerve stress or vertebral subluxations. Naturopathic strategies help raise your natural resistance to disease through utilizing the power of foods and ensuring your body has the proper nutrition.  Our Massage therapists help you get much need rest.

What are vertebral subluxations?

Dr. Tedd Koren writes:

Vertebral subluxations are misaligned vertebrae that cause spinal nerve stress, which in turn interferes with the nervous system and the flow of information and energy between the brain and the rest of the body. This form of stress lowers our natural resistance to disease by unbalancing your nervous system. Health-damaging vertebral subluxations are one of the major causes of dis-ease, or body malfunctioning. Chiropractors perform spinal examinations to detect and locate vertebral subluxations and to correct them by giving Chiropractic spinal adjustments. This relieves the spinal nerve stress and helps restores optimal body functioning for higher resistance to disease, which, we cannot overstate, is the best defense against the common cold. Keeping the spinal column free from vertebral subluxations helps keep natural immunity high. Whatever else you do for yourself, it is essential, if you are suffering from the flu, colds, or respiratory problems, that your spinal column stay healthy. It could make the difference between a quick recovery and lingering illness – even between life and death

Don’t rush towards antibiotics, as they are often not the answer to your snorts, sniffles, and sneezes. Instead, support and empower your body’s natural, innate ability to heal with a natural approach at Erin Mills Optimum Health!

Proactive Approach to Health and Wellness – Chiropractic Advice

Your Mississauga Chiropractor discusses how taking a proactive approach to health and wellness can help your body become its naturally healthy self again!

What happens first? The problem or the pain?

Problems happen first. Be Proactive with your Health.

Think about heart disease.  This is a problem that develops over someone’s entire life and can completely change their quality of life when a big painful event occurs.   Until that event, they are usually quite pain-free.  The same goes for the spine and nerve system.  Our health care system in Canada is completely over burdened with all types of diseases and problems that have developed slowly over time.

Don’t wait for the pain before you make positive changes to your lifestyle.

Instead, take a proactive approach towards health and wellness.

That is what I help people do as a Chiropractor.

Below are some key concepts that need to be understood if you want to live towards a longer, more comfortable, and active life.

 What is health?

Most people answer this question by saying, “when I feel good” or “when I don’t hurt”.  This type of mindset is one reason why our emergency care systems get completely overwhelmed as it feels quite good to sit on the couch, eat chips, and drink beer. But this is not healthy! In fact, many feel good activities, such as sitting for extended periods of time are risk factors for premature death (bad health!)

My favourite definition of Health is by the World Health Organization:

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

This definition starts you thinking towards a completeness of health and not just avoiding pain.  As health is something to continuously strive towards and not to be taken for granted.  Proactive steps need to be taken in order to get the most out of your body.  This type of mindset will help you live proactively towards a longer, more comfortable, and active life!

What is Wellness?

At Erin Mills Optimum Health we consider wellness to be a state of mind or attitude that involves incorporating healthy habits and actions that will lead you towards greater physical, emotional, and spiritual health.  Read more about wellness here.

What are symptoms?

Symptoms are your body talking to you.  Symptoms can include:

  • pain
  • headaches
  • numbness
  • soreness
  • stiffness
  • achiness
  • tiredness
  • depression
  • coughs
  • sneezes
  • fevers etc.

The list is endless and can essentially be explained as the resulting experience of your life on your body.

Your life is experienced through your nerve system.  This nerve system constantly gets input from the body about what is happening in the world or your body.  If something is wrong, it tells you.

But you have to listen.

Some of the signals are confusing.  I commonly have to coach people about what the symptoms they are experiencing are telling them.

Usually people rush to over the counter pain killers or anti-sneezing pills, or anti-coughing pills, or anti-runny nose pills without addressing the reason why the symptom is occurring.  Some of the symptoms they are stopping are actually beneficial for their body to heal (even though they are uncomfortable.)

For example, a cough is designed to make it unfavourable for bugs to live in your lungs, so why stop a cough from occurring? Maybe in church this is a good idea so you don’t interrupt the sermon.

But those are social reasons (also important for Health according to the WHO definition of Health) and will be more comfortable short term, but they are not to encourage your body to heal or live towards a longer more active life.

There are multiple examples of common symptoms that people I see chose to ignore with pills as opposed to doing anything proactively for their body to help it towards a healthier state.

I hope to coach you through some of your that you may be experiencing in order to ensure you live towards a longer, more comfortable, and active life.

I commonly use a graph to demonstrate these concepts. The graphs with my attempt at written explanations are below:

Add Humour to Your Life

Add Humour to Your Life

Humour is a great and healthy habit to incorporate into your life. As a Chiropractor, I work to help people live longer, more comfortable and active lives. I try to help people do this with less reliance on medications and more trust in their bodies.
By building good habits into their routines, I help people accomplish this.  One simple and often overlooked habit that people miss is incorporating humour into their life.  It is hard to laugh when life is challenging and you are in chronic pain. But laughter can be a simple tool that can turn the momentum in your body’s favour and help you feel good.Laughter has been shown to have many healthy benefits and is an excellent way to cope with the demands of work and family.

Some of the healthy benefits of laughter are highlighted in these research articles:

One way I did this was to tune into Funny 820 on the radio on my drive to work.  It helps me cope with commuting, and definitely feels good!

One of my Chiropractic patients recently handed me some information she thought that I would enjoy.  One of the articles she gave me was a Toronto Star article from 2016 called Humour out of Darkness.  It led me to discover Robert Hawke who helps others incorporate Humour into their lives when fighting cancer.  Here is the link to his website for you to see how important humour is in our lives, at every moment. Robert Hawke website.
