Infant with GERD helped with Chiropractic

Infant with GERD helped with Chiropractic – Report on Recent Research Paper

Resolution of GERD in an Infant following Chiropractic Care: A Case Report &  Selective Review of the Literature from the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health May 2016.

This case report highlights the chiropractic care of a 1 month old infant who was experiencing a medical diagnosis of GERD.  The little patient had a great response to chiropractic care.  After each Chiropractic visit the baby’s symptoms improved according to the mother.  The improvements originally lasted 1 day and then lasted up to 11 days before reappearing.  After 3 months of care the chiropractic appointments were able to be extended as the infant continued to improve.  The mother rated the baby’s improvement as a very great deal better on the Global Rating of Change scale.

What is GERD?

According to an international consensus group referred to as the Montreal Definition and Classification of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: A Global Evidence-Based Consensus:

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is “GERD was defined as a condition that develops when the reflux of stomach contents causes troublesome symptoms and/or complications.”

What Chiropractic techniques were used to help this infant?

The Chiropractors in this case series used digital pressure (touch with their fingertips) as well as an activator to adjust the subluxations in the infant’s spine.

The researchers referred to this as full-spine adjusting vis-à-vis modified technique to accommodate the patient’s size and unique biomechanics.

They also used abdominal touch referred to as a gastroesophageal pulldown to impact the stomach directly and cranial work to address the asymmetries in the baby’s skull.

Are there other Chiropractic studies on this topic?

This research paper also did a selective review of the literature regarding “acid reflux”, “gastroesophageal reflux disease”, “GERD”, and Chiropractic for children under the age of 17 years old.  They were able to identify 9 case studies / series that described improvements in children undergoing chiropractic care who were suffering with GERD type diseases.

Resolution of Palsy in Baby Following Chiropractic

Resolution of Erb-Duchenne Palsy in a 5-month-old Female Following Subluxation Based Chiropractic Care

Below are excerpts from a 2016 research article in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, and Family Health titled; “Resolution of Erb-Duchenne Palsy in a 5-month-old Female Following Subluxation Based Chiropractic Care”.

Our Chiropractic assistant in Mississauga was amazed at this chiropractic research article and wanted to share it with our patients.  She remembers seeing birth trauma during a vacuum extraction and was able to relate to this story.  She was amazed at how quickly the baby responded to Chiropractic care.

“Erb-Duchenne Palsy, the paralysis results from forceful downward tractioning of the arm during delivery and results in damage to the C5-C7 nerve roots. The infant at birth presents with internal rotation and adduction of the shoulder with the elbow extended and the wrist flexed while hand function is preserved. ”

“In many cases, patients recover with little in the way of remaining deficit but it is equally certain that in some cases, the patients do not recover.”

“Patients turn to alternative therapies for their children due to chronic and recurrent conditions, concerns about safety of medications and the risks associated with surgery or as an adjunct to medical care. Of the various practitioner-based alternative therapies, chiropractic continues to be popular and highly utilized by adults and their children.”

“5-month-old female with Erb-Duchenne Palsy”

“On the first visit, L4, C1, and T2 subluxations were adjusted with Modified Diversified technique along with myofascial release of the soft tissue elements around the patient’s right radial head.”

“On the second visit, the assessment demonstrated a slight improvement in abduction of the right arm and only a left meningeal stretch was performed. During the third visit the patient demonstrated overall improvement in passive ROM of the right arm.”

“On the 7th visit, the patient demonstrated considerable improvement in ROM and observed to actively reach for toys with her right arm.”

“Nine and a half weeks passed since the patient’s initial consultation with full resolution of the symptoms in the right arm.”

“Vacuum extraction is a prominent risk factor for [birth palsy]”

“The theoretical and clinical framework in the care if this infant was based on the position that the restoration of biomechanical dysfunctions in the cervical and thoracic spine through chiropractic adjustments along with meningeal tension could facilitate restoration of normal function in the brachial plexus.”

“The infant received adjustments characterized as sustained contact “touch and hold” appropriate for the child’s size and unique biomechanical features.”

Report On Resolution Of Failure To Thrive In Infant With Chiropractic Care

Failure to thrive (FTT):

“Failure to Thrive (FTT) is commonly defined as either a weight for the age that falls below the 5th percentile on multiple occasions or a weight deceleration that crosses two major percentile lines on a growth chart.”

“In more than 80% of cases involving FTT, no known underlying medical condition is ever identified”

Resolution Of Failure

Highlights from the case report:

“A 5-month old diagnosed with “failure to thrive” “

“Began at two months of age and was taken to her pediatrician”

“Medical recommendation to the infant’s mother was surgical insertion of feeding tubes. (i.e., gastrostomy) into her child’s stomach. It was then that the infant’s mother sought alternative care approaches. “

“Umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck at birth”

“The child’s parents were extremely concerned about their baby’s health and wanted to avoid the gastrostomy surgery.”

Chiropractic exam

“Spinal palpation revealed subluxation and decreased range of motion at the C1-C4 functional spinal units (FSU’S) and at the T3-T4 FSU.”

Activator methods and diversified technique were used to specifically adjust the child’s spine

Probiotics were suggested to aid in the recovery of the gut flora

“Following the child’s first chiropractic visit, the infant’s mother reported that her child slept a few hours continuously”

“The infant’s color returned”

“Given the positive response to chiropractic care, the infant’s parents elected not to have their child undergo the gastrostomy surgery.”

“Long-term follow-up revealed a healthy developing 5-year old who has met all developmental milestones and is enjoying good health.”

Report from our chiropractic office:

“I think all babies should see a chiropractor.  There are clearly huge benefits to seeing the chiropractor, which include relief for worried and exhausted parents and pain relief for babies.” – Tara, office staff for Dr. Callum Peever

Constipation in Infants – The Chiropractic Approach

Constipation in Infants – The Chiropractic Approach

Constipation in infants is a distressing time for the infant and the mother. We see this situation occur often at our chiropractic wellness center in Mississauga in infants from days old to months old. The mother has usually tried numerous methods of encouraging the baby to have a bowel movement, up to and including laxatives. In Chiropractic, we take a natural approach towards infant constipation relief.

The Chiropractic approach towards helping an infant that is experiencing constipation is to simply check the spine and nerve system for subluxations that can be interfering with the brain-gut connection. The process of checking an infant is very gentle and involves:

  • comparing the baby’s posture as he/she is lying, sitting, and being held by the mother (or father)
  • lightly touching the spine
  • visually inspecting the butt crease for asymmetry

If an infant is subluxated, they regularly have difficulty being regular with their bowel movements. When an infant is not subluxated, they have a better ability to function – including their gut.

How does a chiropractor check and adjust a baby’s spine?

If an infant is subluxated at an area of their spine, a gentle and specific chiropractic adjustment can be made. The adjustment is usually a finger contact at points in the baby’s spine or pelvis with a light pressure that is similar to the pressure that you would comfortably place on your own eyeball – very light. An activator adjusting instrument can also be used to do the specific chiropractic adjustment and has specific force levels that are adjusted to an infant setting.

Where can I read more about chiropractic adjusting for children and infants?

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association is an amazing organization which focuses on advancing the family wellness lifestyle. Check out their website at http://icpa4kids.org/

Here is some research regarding constipation in infants being positively impacted with the help of chiropractic adjustments of subluxations beyond what we have experienced in our own children and our patients’ children:

In your Mississauga Chiropractic wellness office are you able to check children?

We are able to check and adjust children at our chiropractic office in Mississauga.  Definitely connect to our wellness office in Mississauga to have your baby checked if experiencing uncomfortable constipation.  It may be as simple as having a subluxation that is preventing the proper coordination of the gut.  Babys need chiropractic too!

Our Chiropractors will help you connect directly to the Naturopaths to make it an easy experience at our office. Definitely contact us in Mississauga if you have any questions.

Resolution of Chronic Constipation in a 5-year-old Female Following Chiropractic Care

The above research article is from 2017 and highlights the improvements of a young girl who suffered with chronic constipation.  Here are some of my favourite excerpts from the study:

“The patient was a 5-year-old female of Caucasian decent who
presented to the doctor’s office with complaints of
constipation, bloating, and abdominal pain since six months of
age, as reported by the patient’s mother. Both the patient and
her mother report the patient experiences these symptoms on a
daily basis and experienced little to no relief from the use
laxatives, oils, and high fiber diets as prescribed by her
medical doctor. ”

“At visit number 12, the patient was no longer complaining of
abdominal pain, and the patient’s mother reported an improvement in the patient’s demeanor in addition to her reports of
the patient’s normal bowel function.”

“The Diversified chiropractic technique is considered the most
general technique, as it uses a wide variety of assessment methods as well as multiple adjusting methods.”

“Diversified Technique practitioners also utilize both high and low velocity adjustments, and may also use adjusting tools and drop tables to deliver the adjustment depending on the unique situation of each patient. The Diversified Technique is considered a full
spine technique, and assessment and correction are not
restricted to one area of the spine.”
