Doula Support

"I breath in relaxation, I breathe out and let go of tension"

"As the surges continue, my body relaxes"

A hand on the back, hip squeeze, a whisper of "you are doing perfectly", a suggestion for more liquids and straw from your partner, an offer to help change labouring positions, mirroring calm breathing pattern during a rest phase.

These are all examples of doula support during labour and birth. We have experienced ND doulas who provide comfort with pain-relief techniques including breathing techniques, relaxation techniques and massage.

Your ND doula will help with the following:

*  Help articulate your birth preferences
*  Gather resources in the community for pregnant women and families
*  Help you to remain calm and supported
*  Encourage communicating your needs with your midwife or OB.

Research shows that women who have a birth doula present:
*  Decreases the need for pitocin
*  Decreases the need for an epidural
*   Are less likely to need a C-section
*   Are more likely to report having a positive experience during labour

New Mom after delivery with help from the Naturopathic Doulas at Erin Mills Optimum Health

Naturopathic Doula Helped Throughout Pregnancy

Naturopathic Doula Helped Throughout Pregnancy

When we found out I was pregnant my husband and I both agreed that we wanted to use a natural health approach with the pregnancy. The medical system in our country is great but my husband and I knew we wanted to go as natural and holistic as possible for the pregnancy and birth of our child.

The day after finding out I was pregnant I came in to work and received a B12 shot from Dr. Lanigan.  I was already taking a prenatal vitamin but I wanted to give my body and baby a folic acid boost.

From that first visit I booked in with the Naturopathic Doctors for wellness visits, I maintained a happy and relatively healthy pregnancy. Sure there were some bumps along the way (heartburn and back pain) but taking the holistic approach with our Naturopathic Doctors was amazing and really worked for me.

Erin Mills Optimum Health offers The Mongan Method of HypnoBirthing®. My husband and I attended these classes at the clinic which helped us prepare for birth with great relaxation methods as well as many other suggestions.

We had Dr. Lanigan attend the birth of our son as our Naturopathic Doula and I loved being able to have acupuncture and other relaxation remedies available throughout the delivery to have the natural, undmedicated birth I had envisioned.

It was great having a Naturopathic Doula who knew our birth plan and helped to execute it as my husband and I wanted. Dr. Lanigan knew all the right questions to ask and was able to help explain and clarify anything we had questions about during the delivery.

“Find A Midwife And Book My Doula”

Congratulations! You’ve just found out you’re pregnant! If you’re like most expectant Mom’s your next thought is probably something along the lines of:

“what do I do next?”

From working at a holistic health centre in Mississauga, I knew that my answer was “Find a Midwife, and book my Doula!”

We have two Naturopathic Doula’s at Erin Mills Optimum Health who I saw throughout my entire pregnancy, labour, and after birth.

A Naturopathic Doula’s scope of practice is that of a Naturopathic Doctor as well as a trained Doula.  During my pregnancy I was able to receive B12 shots to make sure that my folic acid levels were good for my growing baby, along with acupuncture to help maintain a healthy pregnancy.  I also was able to consult on the supplements I was taking for my overall well-being.

Having a trained Naturopathic Doula was an amazing experience. When I was diagnosed with Gestational Hypertension (High Blood Pressure from pregnancy) at 30 weeks and the OB was considering induction, I was able to consult with Dr. Aisling Lanigan, my Doula, as well as Dr. Kirsten Almon and between the three of us we were able to use acupuncture, supplements, diet and exercise to help my pregnancy to go to term (I delivered my son at 39 weeks, 1 day before my scheduled induction).

Along with full support during my pregnancy the Naturopathic Doulas at Erin Mills Optimum Health are also trained in HypnoBirthing® – The Mongan Method. I have always wanted to have a 100% natural delivery so my husband and I signed up for the course to help us learn different birthing positions as well as relaxation techniques that we used while I was in labour. When I was at 39weeks my OB was adiment that she wanted to induce labour as she felt it was only a matter of time before things started to go wrong.

I remained stubborn and went in to the clinic to see one of our massage therapists as well as Dr. Almon for acupuncture in the hopes to induce my labour and contractions naturally before needing medical assistance in starting them. I was at the clinic on a Tuesday afternoon and that night I started having contractions. By the time I woke up Wednesday morning my contractions were becoming more frequent and throughout the day they began to increase in intensity.

As soon as I was sure I was having regular contractions I contacted Dr. Lanigan who was able to coach me over the phone which allowed me to labour in the comfort of my home as long as possiable. I finally went to the hospital with my husband closer to dinner time to see how my labour was progressing. After being checked by an OB I was admitted and my husband got on the phone and called Dr. Lanigan. She came to the hospital right away and walked the halls with my husband and I, and also helped to remind us of all the positions and techniques that we had learned in our birthing classes.

My contractions ended up not increasing so I was put on an IV drip.  With having a Doula by my side I was able to labour and deliver my son 100% naturally with no other interventions, which was my original plan. After delivery there were some minor issues for me that needed to be addressed.

My husband and I had such peace of mind because Dr. Lanigan stayed in the room with my husband and our son and the Midwife stayed with me. Knowing that we had an advocate in the room with us throughout the whole experience was so reassuring and something neither of us will ever forget.

Younger Next Year Book Report by Mississauga Chiropractor

Younger Next Year book report by Mississauga Chiropractor

Younger Next Year puts you in the perspective of Chris who is applying the information from his Medical Doctor Henry towards becoming “Younger Next Year”. Chris is starting his 60’s and has a choice to make, does he care enough to put in the effort required to live a good life into his 80’s? Or does he allow his body to slowly deteriorate into his 80’s as is the current expectation of many?

Younger Next Year is written by Chris Crowley and Henry S. Lodge, MD.

Fortunately for all of us, the science of aging has revealed that it is possible to live well into our 80’s, but it does take effort. This book does highlight some great steps, such as:

  • taking charge of your body and your life
  • strength training and endurance training, including strategies using a heart rate monitor
  • nutrition, including good fats and good foods
  • mindset, such as caring about appearance and the steps required to live well
  • relationships, with your spouse, friends, and family
  • lifestyle factors, from alcohol to exercise

As a Chiropractor in Mississauga, this book highlights many topics that my patients could benefit from. The concept I often do encourage to many patients is that they can be “younger next year”. There are many patients I have that come into mind that through hard work and lifestyle changes they were able to live a younger life this year than they were 5 years ago. This is very empowering to the patient, and can be just the motivation they need to make the first steps in their life towards living a “younger life”.

What would YOU need to do to live “younger next year”?

Sometimes a patients will comment that they “feel 80 years old” or I see them moving in their chiropractic exam like they are in their 80’s. I will then ask that person throughout their chiropractic care how old they feel now? That perception of aging can be a great measure of your life.

How old do you feel today?

How are you moving today? I also see patients in their 80’s who are moving as if they are 60!

Who would you rather be?

Is it worth your time and effort to have that life experience?

Often times my new chiropractic patients are “stuck” in their life. A specific injury or multitude of injuries are holding them back. After an initial course of Chiropractic adjustments, it is incredible to see them get back to their naturally healthy selves. I usually tell them to continue the momentum they have gained in their health and continue it towards new goals! Perhaps you are stuck? If you are in Hamilton or Mississauga I would love to meet you and determine if your case is a Chiropractic case which could help you get back to your naturally healthy self!

picture of wires to help with biological communication analogy

Biological Communication explained by Mississauga Chiropractor

Your body has a natural biological communication system that is remarkable – Mississauga Chiropractor Micheline Cote helps you learn how this communication works

This natural communication system is way more sophisticated than what humans have been able to conceive and develop to this point. Even the most recent smart phone does not even come close to being as smart as your inborn innate intelligence when it comes to communication. (This might come as a surprise to teens and millennials).

Your body has a hardwired system via the nervous system and a wireless system via hormones / body energy

This system is similar to the communication you have in your house: You have communication devices that need to be connected into the wall (hardwired) and you also have communication wirelessly through the Wifi router that picks up the communication waves. Every cell in your body is in constant communication thanks to this innate communication system in the body.  What is amazing is that this communication system is functioning 100% of the time and with no need to plug into the wall to recharge.

This natural system is incredible and supporting it to communicate at its best is what I do as a Chiropractor for my patients in Mississauga – Dr. Micheline Cote

How does a Chiropractor support the natural communication system in my body?

The nerve system is the “hardwired” communication system in the body.  The spinal cord must connect from the brain to every tissue and cell in the body in order to communicate.  This spinal cord goes through the spine.  These spinal bones have a very important role in protecting the wires of this natural communication system.  These spinal bones also have a difficult role in our daily demands of life, work, and sports. Any misalignment of the spinal bones can cause disruption in signals along the natural hard wired communication system.  Chiropractors refer to this health impacting phenomenon as a subluxation.  A subluxation (misalignment in the spine causing nerve disruption) can disturb this communication leading to improper responses in the body.  These improper responses can cause health problems – not just pain.  In my book titled “Pain or No Pain-The Chiropractic Connection” I discuss Chiropractic patients’ experiences in regaining their health through Chiropractic care.

Pain as a signal

Pain is a large part of how your body communicates to your brain that there is a problem.  But this warning signal can malfunction with improper communication and is usually ignored for years before anything is done about it.  That is why Chiropractors address the spine.  We encourage proper communication along your nerve system and support your body to function as it naturally should.  When your body is communicating well it has a much easier time to heal naturally.

Communication error as the cause of disease

A famous Chiropractor, Dr. Fred Barge, wrote a book titled “One Cause One Cure”, which discussed how the inability of the body to comprehend itself and the environment was the cause of bad health and disease.  In addressing how your body is able to comprehend itself and its environment, you can move closer and closer to your natural healthy self.

Can Chiropractors help the “wireless” communication system in the body?

The “wireless” communication system in your body is still directly controlled and coordinated by the central nervous system (the brain).  The glands and cells that release the hormones are stimulated and calmed by signals from the hardwired nerve system. A subluxation in the spine can negatively impact the nerve system at multiple levels along the spine, as well as indirectly impact the source of the signals at the brain.  Chiropractors directly address these subluxated spinal bones that are impacting the nerves.  By removing any communication blockages caused by subluxations, chiropractors can directly and indirectly impact the “wireless” communication system in the body.

How does a Chiropractor measure biological communication systems?

The latest measuring instruments to easily assess the body’s way to communicate are surface electromyography (SEMG) which measures the electrical activity in the muscles along the spine and Thermography which measures the skin temperature also along the spine. With these instruments you can detect differences in how the nervous system functions at its exit from the spine. You can then extrapolate from the results if there is a connection with the patient’s malfunction or communication breakdown.

In addition the leg length analysis we use when checking patients for subluxations shows disturbances in the body’s communication system and so do tests like the postural evaluations and balance tests like standing on one leg with your eyes closed or walking heel to toe with eyes closed. All these procedures can show a disruption in the body’s ability to communicate internally and as a response to external stimuli.

Chiropractors are the only health professional concerned with the correction of subluxation and restoration of proper biological communication – Naturally!

What is Natural Health?

What is natural health?

At Erin Mills Optimum Health, “natural health” is function. It is not just about feeling good or not feeling sick. Natural health is functioning at your OPTIMUM in all aspects of life; from how your body’s physiology is working, to how you perform at home, work, and at the gym. Realize that your body has all that it needs to get to this level, it was designed to be healthy. We can help you reach that state of natural health by addressing the body from the top-down, bottom-up, and outside-in all to empower the body from the inside-out naturally.

“The doctor of the future will give no medicines, but will interest his patients in the care of human frame, in diet, and in the causes and prevention of disease.”
Thomas Edison

“Top-Down” – Your brain controls and coordinates all aspects of your body. The brain connects to the body through nerves which leave from the top (skull) and head “down” (through the spinal cord) to your body. The spine protects this cord but can interfere with the messages travelling from the “top-down”. Chiropractors check and remove this interference through specific spinal adjustments.

“The beauty about Chiropractic is the fact that it works with natural means. It puts nothing new into the body, nor does it take away any natural gland or organ. Chiropractic simply releases life forces within the body, sets free ribulets of energy over nerves, and lets nature do her work in a normal matter.”
B.J. Palmer – Developer of Chiropractic

“Bottom-Up” – You explore the world on your feet. Not only do your feet impact the mechanics of your whole spine, but they also take quite the impact when exploring. By caring for your feet our Chiropodist and Reflexologist support you towards health from the “bottom-up”.

May your feet take you where your brain wants to go.

“Outside-In” – You are exposed to daily chemicals and pollutants that your body has to detoxify, adapt to, and filter. These “outside-in” stressors need to be addressed to allow your body to reach its optimum state of function and health. Our Naturopaths are experts at taking a look at what “outside-in” stressors are challenging your body and how to support the body’s natural healing ability through foods.

Start functioning at your optimum and become your naturally healthy self – we can help.
