Empowering the birth experience

Many women have different experiences during the birth process--it is always my intention to have my patient's be as prepared as possible during their pregnancies for labour.
Some of the Naturopathic modalities I use are monthly acupuncture visits, handing out tasty recipes to help optimized their nutrition while nourishing their babies as well as herbal and supplement recommendations as needed. Along the way once they are into their 2nd trimester, it is an ideal time to do a prenatal class-here at our Mississauga health clinic we offer HypnoBirthing.

HypnoBirthing ® Principles

One of the principles behind HypnoBirthing is the "law of psycho-physical response" meaning, for every thought or emotion there is a corresponding chemical and physiological response within the body.
This can look like the following if someone is perceiving fear:
When a labouring mother perceives fear, this will cause adrenaline to surge and oxytocin to drop-->the problem with this is that it will cause labour to not only slow down or stop altogether, but it can also increase sensation of pain.
When a mother feels calm, it will change from fear to this:
The goal of HypnoBirthing is to facilitate a sensation of calm and confidence in the mother.
Some amazing examples of evidence-based HypnoBirthing outcomes:
*  fewer cases of pre-eclampsia
*  decreased use of oxytocin
*  decreased need for C-section
*  shorter first and second phase of labour

Preparing for the Big Day--BIRTH!

Today one of my appointments is meeting with a couple to discuss how they can best prepare for labour. I LOVE these appointments. This is such a major event, and not one to "wing". Preparing for labour takes time and practice: Practicing relaxation is one of the best ways to get ready for birth.
Since we teach and are certified in HypnoBirthing, this is also something that I really encourage women and their partners to experience. Having done this is my own labours, I feel like it was the best fit for me as it really helped with anxiety leading up to the due date.
Breathing is another excellent coping strategy during labour. Making sure to take long slow breaths through the nose can actually help diminish the sensations as the surge or contraction comes and goes.
I'm looking forward to highliting these topics as well as leading mom and partner through a relaxation script.

What is an allergic response?

Sometimes we must retreat inside, even on beautiful days to feel better. Sometimes allergies trigger asthma making them even worse. For some of us we think that the only way to deal with the allergies is to take prescription medicines that may work temporarily but never really get to the cause of why we react.

Natural Relief from Seasonal Allergies

As a Chiropractor in Mississauga, I am always discussing health topics such as allergies with my patients.  My patients are often looking for ways to take a more natural approach without the use of drugs towards better health.  Allergies is a perfect example about a health topic that requires an alternative viewpoint such as one from a Chiropractic perspective.  Many community members in Mississauga are often learning about allergies from allergy drug commercials on television, but they don’t stop to think about what allergies are or how to address them from a more natural perspective.

How a Chiropractor views allergies

Allergies are your body’s attempt to address your external world.  You can stop your body’s allergic response with drugs, but in doing so you are shutting down your body’s immune system and interfering with your body’s attempt to deal with your environment.

Chiropractors and Naturopaths agree that allergies can definitely be:

  • Annoying
  • itchy
  • irritating
  • socially unacceptable

Common Allergies & Symptoms include:

  • red, itchy eyes
  • sneezing
  • runny or clogged nose
  • sinus headaches
  • wheezing
  • watery eyes

Chiropractors also realize that allergies can make it difficult to:

  • Breathe, and can be a big component of asthma
  • make your eyes itchy, sore, and watery
  • make you sneeze and coug
  • make you feel sluggish and doz
  • make it difficult to sleep

What can you for allergies then?

  1. Help your body function better.
  2. Minimize your exposure to allergens that your body has difficult with.

1) There are many ways the help your body function better:

Your Mississauga Chiropractor can help determine some spots where you can start.  All aspects of function matter – physical, chemical, and emotional aspects all play a major part at how your body is functioning well.

My practical expertise at Erin Mills Optimum Health is at helping your spine and nervous system work better.  As a Chiropractor I do focus more on the physical impacts on your body, but I also will discuss the emotional and chemical components.  The reason that chiropractic can help is the role of the spine and how it can impact the nerve system which controls your immune system.  If your immune system is coordinated with better instructions from your nerve system, it tends not to over react and create allergic reactions to the mundane allergens.

By reducing stress on your nerve system, it also allows your body to have a greater capacity for handling the external world.  A greater capacity to manage is very important in the allergy world.  By increasing your capacity to adapt to the environment as well as by reducing the allergens you are exposed to, you can greatly improve your allergy experience.  It does take effort, but you are worth it!

2) Minimize your exposure to allergens that your body has difficult with.

Minimizing your exposure to allergens just makes sense.  Avoid what you are allergic to! Clean, fresh air is better than air filled with allergens.  You won’t be able to avoid everything, but your body will definitely appreciate your attempts to reduce your exposure to irritants.  Vacuum more, filter your air, and avoid foods and events that you know will over stress your body’s immune system.

What causes allergies?

Seasonal allergies are a form of allergic rhinitis, or inflammation of the nose. This occurs when the immune system reacts defensively to substances in your environment– like pollen, mold and pet dander – by releasing a flood of histamine, a neurotransmitter that triggers inflammation.

Inflammation is a normal, healthy response to pathogens, which helps the body naturally heal itself. Like any allergy, hay fever is an immunity disorder in which the body overreacts to a non-dangerous trigger, such as pollen.

Risk factors for allergic rhinitis include a family history of allergy, having other allergies, such as food allergies or eczema, exposure to second-hand smoke, a poor diet, lack of exercise, fatigue and stress.

Researchers also speculate that an aggressive childhood vaccination schedule may prompt an autoimmune response, which might be associated with the rise of cases of allergic rhinitis.  To learn more about this check out Vaccine Choice Canada.

So what causes seasonal allergies?

Seasonal allergies, allergic rhinitis or hayfever is a type 1 hypersensitivity to airborne allergens such as pollens, pets, dust and foods. When a sensitized individual breathes in the allergens it creates a response by IgE antibodies which release multiple inflammatory modulators, like Histamine.

Chiropractic’s Holistic Perspective of Allergy Prevention

The Risks of Allergy Medication

Many people attempt to counteract the inflammatory action of histamines with allergy drugs called antihistamines. They function by blocking the histamine receptors in certain cells.

The common use of antihistamines is concerning because they carry certain risks, which people are not aware of. Some of these drugs cross the blood-brain barrier and have strong sedative effects, including drowsiness, dizziness, poor concentration, blurred vision and tremors.  The brain is being seen as more and more important, and allowing it to be exposed to chemicals from drugs doesn’t make sense.

Other antihistamines can cause dangerous drug interactions.

Allergic rhinitis already hinders learning, decision-making speed and psychomotor speed – why take a chance of making the situation worse by adding drugs into the mix?

Keep it clean with nasal irrigation.

Nasal irrigation is a safe and highly effective method of allergy control. Used for centuries in some cultures and now popular in the West as well, nasal irrigation involves flushing the nose and sinuses with saline solution, either from cupped hands, a syringe or a neti pot.  The process rinses dried mucus and foreign matter like pollen from the nasal and sinus cavities.

What can we do Naturopathically for Allergy Relief?

Instead of focusing on the what we are allergic to, as Naturopaths we are interested in why we are allergic. Seasonal allergies are frequently only symptoms of an imbalanced immune system and an overburdened detoxification system. If we can address those things then we can get rid of allergies for good!

We have many tools at our disposal to help. We may begin by addressing the gut and any underlying sensitivities, we also use immunomodulators specific for allergies to restore the immune system, we use hepatics to improve liver function in order to decrease the allergic response and then reinoculate the system with probiotics in order to establish & maintain a healthy terrain.

Fight Allergies with Nutrition

Certain nutrients also fight the inflammation response that triggers allergies. Vitamin C, for instance, suppresses histamine production by white blood cells. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant found in many of the fruits and vegetables the doctor recommends consuming for optimal health. The nutrient is especially plentiful in rose hips, acerola, red peppers, guava, kiwifruit and broccoli.

Researchers tested a vitamin C nasal spray on patients suffering from allergic rhinitis. After two weeks of daily treatment, 74 percent experienced significant relief of inflammation and nasal secretions.

Treatment of perennial allergic rhinitis with ascorbic acid solution.

 Carotenoids, including beta-carotene, are also abundant in several plant sources. Research shows that these nutrients are associated with lower levels of inflammation.

Carotenoid-rich foods include apricots, carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato, spinach, kale, butternut squash and collard greens.

Omega-3 fatty acids are among the “essential” fatty acids that the body cannot synthesize on its own – and therefore must obtain through diet. One investigation correlated low incidence of allergic rhinitis with high levels of onega-3s in the red blood cells of study subjects.

Other studies also show that omega-3s counter the specific type if inflammation associated with allergies.

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids are consumed during allergic inflammation and affect T helper type 1 (Th1)- and Th2-mediated hypersensitivity differently

To get a healthy dose of this nutritional powerhouse, consume fish and fish oil (taking care to avoid those with high mercury levels), flaxseed and walnuts.

Consume Local Honey

By eating local honey, it is thought that you can be exposed to small amounts of local pollen.  This could train your immune system by having it experience small amounts of the local pollen at a time, as opposed to one big rush during the allergy season.  By making efforts throughout the year you can try to minimize the impact that the allergy season has on your body.

Supplements to Consider from our Naturopathic Doctors

Several plant based remedies also show promise in reducing the symptoms of seasonal allergies. For instance, an analysis of nettle extract uncovered several mechanisms by which it suppresses allergic rhinitis.

Nettle Extract (Urtica dioica) Affects Key Receptors and Enzymes Associated with Allergic Rhinitis

Bromelian, an enzyme extracted from pineapples, is available as a supplements and has been shown to reduce allergic rhinitis.

Blocking of protease allergens with inhibitors reduces allergic responses in allergic rhinitis and other allergic diseases.

Researchers have also found that the flavonoid quercetin, which naturally occurs in tea, impedes histamine release in allergy sufferers.

Spirulina, an algae that is a popular health supplement, reduces nasal discharge, itching, sneezing and congestion.

Efficacy of Spirulina Supplementation on Isometric Strength and Isometric Endurance of Quadriceps in Trained and Untrained Individuals – a comparative study

Biminne is a Chinese herbal formula used to treat allergic rhinitis. In one study of 58 people with year-round allergic rhinitis, biminne was found to effectively relieve symptoms in most of the participants.

Tinospora Cordifolia (Guduchi) is a medicinal herb popular in India. In one study, researchers gave 75 allergic rhinitis patients either tinospora cordifolia (TC) extract or placebo for eight weeks. The researchers concluded: “The difference between TC and placebo groups was highly significant…TC significantly decreased all symptoms of allergic rhinitis.”

The Power of Allergic Rhinitis

“Probiotic” literally means “for life” and encompasses a variety of microorganisms that live in and confer health benefits on a host.

You may be most familiar with probiotic supplements in the context of digestive health. However, since a large portion of the immune system is in the gut, what protects the digestive system can indirectly help the function of the entire body, including the nose and sinuses.

My 40 day (39 day) yoga challenge during Detox in Mississauga

I am in the midst of doing a 40 day yoga challenge–which is all about love. It took and continues to take a lot of effort and focus. I have 11 days left and see the progress that I have made. It is truly a transformative experience. It has been a perfect time to do this as we are moving from summer to Fall. This is also an ideal time to do a cleanse or detoxification. The yoga helps to transform and move old and toxic energy.
During this period, I had one of the busiest days of practice I’ve ever had in all of my 14 years! Later that evening I had a meeting with some colleagues. By the time I arrived home it was after 11 and I thought to myself, “If I really love myself, I will bypass the yoga tonight and get more sleep–which is what I REALLY need”.
So now I joke that I am doing a “39 day challenge”. I have no regrets that I missed that day of my detox.
Anyone who has ever been interested in doing a 40 yoga retreat or other type of retreat, I highly recommend it!

Feeling Low on Energy

Feeling Low on Energy?

 

“Do you have anything for energy?” Is one of the most common phrases I hear from patients.  As a Naturopathic Doctor in Mississauga, it is my job to get to the root cause of why you are feeling tired so that you can be at the top of your game at home, at work or at school.

The first thing I ask my patients after they tell me they are tired is, “Tell me about your sleep?”  Most patients don’t get enough quality sleep.  Dr. Wyse ND wrote an excellent article on sleeping difficulties about how Naturopathic medicine can improve sleep quality and quantity.

If you are not waking refreshed, despite a good night’s sleep, there are other factors that need to be investigated.  Comprehensive blood work can rule out any deficiencies in iron levels and B12 or hormone imbalances such as a thyroid condition.  Blood work can also rule out a more serious underlying condition.

Poor gut health can be a reason why vitamins and minerals aren’t being absorbed properly, leading to fatigue.  Your Naturopathic doctor can get your digestive system back on track by discovering food sensitivities and improving leaky gut.

Stress can play a big role in why you may be tired.  Your stress hormone, cortisol, should be the highest in the morning, and decrease at night.  Chronic stress upsets this rhythm.  If your body remains in a constant state of stress, your cortisol levels stay high.  This can disrupt sleep or deplete your adrenal glands causing a constant state of being “tired but wired”.  Making sure to add in recovery time to your exercise routine and daily regime is important.

Certain medications can deplete essential nutrients such as B12 and CoQ10.  Your Mississauga Naturopathic Doctor can speak to you about how we can support the side effects of your conventional medications.

After getting to the root cause of why you are tired, your Naturopath can offer diet and lifestyle advice as well as herbs and supplements.  We also offer B12 injections and intravenous vitamin infusions.  The injections and IVs are able to give you high doses while bypassing the stomach.  Since the dosages can be much higher than in an oral form, most patients notice results much quicker.
