The Paleo Cardiologist - book report

The Paleo Cardiologist - The natural way to heart health by Jack Wolfson DO, FACC

book title page for the Paleo Cardiologist

I was suggested this book by a Mississauga patient of mine and greatly enjoyed it.  The Author, Dr. Jack Wolfson, is a cardiologist who was opened up to the wellness paradigm when he met his wife, a Chiropractor.  His life views were challenged and he was able to realize where he was approaching his health, his patients’ health, and his work approach from an improper angle.  Changing his perspective towards a wellness paradigm helped him and helped countless others with their heart health in particular, but their health in general. The Paleo Cardiologist goes through many practical ways in which you can impact your heart health, from a more natural perspective that aims at avoiding unnecessary medical procedures, tests, and drugs.  The author argues with science, data, clinical experience, and patient stories at how getting the body back into an environment that it was developed for allows for it to work properly again.  Treat it well, and it does well.  Treat it poorly, and it has difficulty keeping up.

The chapters include topics such as:

Cholesterol, the Paleo diet, Nutrition, Anti-Depressants, medications, toxins in the world, heavy metals, sleep, inactivity, water, Chiropractic, supplements, and blood tests. I am a Chiropractor, and not a Cardiologist, but I have been made aware of the problems regarding cholesterol lowering drugs.  Dr. Jack Wolfson’s chapters on this topic are a great primer for those that have not heard of the concern before.  Check it out in his book or look up the research yourself. Being a Chiropractor, I am aware of the impact that the spine and nervous system can have on the heart, cardiovascular health, and well-being in general.

Dr. Wolfson’s chapter on Chiropractic care regarding heart health summarizes our approach well with his action plan :

“ 1. Every single cell in the body is connected to the nervous system
  1. Routine daily activity can wreak havoc on your spine.
  2. Chiropractic care restores health and function to your brain, nerves, and entire body.
  3. Every cardiovascular problem can be improved with Chiropractic care.”
It is amazing to read a book like this with so much advice from an expert in his field who has lived and has worked in both paradigms of heart health.  I learned a lot from this book and I know you will too. -Dr. Callum Peever - Chiropractic in Mississauga at Erin Mills Optimum Health

Heart Health Variability and Chiropractic

Heart rate variability is a phrase that you will begin to see more and more.  We have been seeing it in the Chiropractic research literature for some time now and I have also begun to see it in fitness magazines.  Interstingly, the new smart watches measure and update you about your heart rate variability. But what is it? Heart rate variability is an indicator of your body's abilty to adapt, or your adaptability. The heart rate is controlled by the nervous system in your body.  The nervous system has two states (sympathetic and parasympathetic). Sypathetic = "fight or flight" Parasympathetic = "rest and recover" The heart rate innately want to go fast, but your brain and nerve system slow it down by using the parasympathetic nerves.  When you are excercising, your heart rate gets put into a steady rythm to keep up with your demands, this is a sympathetic state. Sympathetic = steady but fast Heart Rate When you are resting, your heart rate should be more variable.  This is when you are in a more parasympathethic state. Parasympathetic = Variable Heart Rate You want a higher heart rate variability to indicate a better state of health or rest.

Who uses Heart Rate Variability?

Many different fields of study are using Heart Rate Variability for many different things.  Interestingly, your Heart Rate Variability can be a good indicator of your ability to adapt.  Being able to adapt is a big indicator of your health. This measure is used to help athletes know when they are exhausted and should recover longer. (helps prevent over training) In Medicine, heart rate variability can be used as a prognostic factor regarding patients with heart health problems, such as heart attacks, as well as cancer patients undergoing extensive treatment.  If your body has the ability the adapt to your challenges, it has a much better chance of surviving and recovering!

How does Chiropractic play a role in Heart Rate Variability?

Chiropractic has a large focus on the most important part of your body! The brain and nerve system.  By contacting the bones of the spine, Chiropractic can reduce the interference and stress that is placed on the spinal cord.  A spinal cord that is under stress will be in a more sympathetic state, with a lower variable heart rate.  In adjusting areas of stress in the spine, that are called Subluxations, Chiropractic adjustments can impact a person's heart rate variability and allow the body to find a natural balance in the sympathetic and parasympathetic system. Here is a research study on the impact a chiropractic adjustment can have on heart rate variability: The impact of cervical manipulation on heart rate variability.

Proactive Approach to Health and Wellness – Chiropractic Advice

Your Mississauga Chiropractor discusses how taking a proactive approach to health and wellness can help your body become its naturally healthy self again!

What happens first? The problem or the pain?

Problems happen first. Be Proactive with your Health.

Think about heart disease.  This is a problem that develops over someone’s entire life and can completely change their quality of life when a big painful event occurs.   Until that event, they are usually quite pain-free.  The same goes for the spine and nerve system.  Our health care system in Canada is completely over burdened with all types of diseases and problems that have developed slowly over time.

Don’t wait for the pain before you make positive changes to your lifestyle.

Instead, take a proactive approach towards health and wellness.

That is what I help people do as a Chiropractor.

Below are some key concepts that need to be understood if you want to live towards a longer, more comfortable, and active life.

 What is health?

Most people answer this question by saying, “when I feel good” or “when I don’t hurt”.  This type of mindset is one reason why our emergency care systems get completely overwhelmed as it feels quite good to sit on the couch, eat chips, and drink beer. But this is not healthy! In fact, many feel good activities, such as sitting for extended periods of time are risk factors for premature death (bad health!)

My favourite definition of Health is by the World Health Organization:

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

This definition starts you thinking towards a completeness of health and not just avoiding pain.  As health is something to continuously strive towards and not to be taken for granted.  Proactive steps need to be taken in order to get the most out of your body.  This type of mindset will help you live proactively towards a longer, more comfortable, and active life!

What is Wellness?

At Erin Mills Optimum Health we consider wellness to be a state of mind or attitude that involves incorporating healthy habits and actions that will lead you towards greater physical, emotional, and spiritual health.  Read more about wellness here.

What are symptoms?

Symptoms are your body talking to you.  Symptoms can include:

  • pain
  • headaches
  • numbness
  • soreness
  • stiffness
  • achiness
  • tiredness
  • depression
  • coughs
  • sneezes
  • fevers etc.

The list is endless and can essentially be explained as the resulting experience of your life on your body.

Your life is experienced through your nerve system.  This nerve system constantly gets input from the body about what is happening in the world or your body.  If something is wrong, it tells you.

But you have to listen.

Some of the signals are confusing.  I commonly have to coach people about what the symptoms they are experiencing are telling them.

Usually people rush to over the counter pain killers or anti-sneezing pills, or anti-coughing pills, or anti-runny nose pills without addressing the reason why the symptom is occurring.  Some of the symptoms they are stopping are actually beneficial for their body to heal (even though they are uncomfortable.)

For example, a cough is designed to make it unfavourable for bugs to live in your lungs, so why stop a cough from occurring? Maybe in church this is a good idea so you don’t interrupt the sermon.

But those are social reasons (also important for Health according to the WHO definition of Health) and will be more comfortable short term, but they are not to encourage your body to heal or live towards a longer more active life.

There are multiple examples of common symptoms that people I see chose to ignore with pills as opposed to doing anything proactively for their body to help it towards a healthier state.

I hope to coach you through some of your that you may be experiencing in order to ensure you live towards a longer, more comfortable, and active life.

I commonly use a graph to demonstrate these concepts. The graphs with my attempt at written explanations are below:

Take control of your life towards wellness with Chiropractic

Wellness is a popular term now and can be used many different ways.

At Erin Mills Optimum Health we consider wellness to be a state of mind or attitude that involves incorporating habits and actions that will lead you towards greater physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

Here are some strategies to adopt in order to develop a wellness attitude:

  • Take responsibility for your health. Acknowledge that you are ultimately responsible for your own well-being and that you allow yourself to be a priority in your life.
  • Be committed to your health and life goals.
  • Get educated on ways to increase your health.
  • Don’t merely focus on ways to avoid being sick, instead focus on gaining health.  “Chiropractic is the study of the cause of health while medicine is the study of the causes of disease.”
  • Focus on prevention. Don’t only do healthy behaviour when you run into a health crisis or when you are injured.
  • Create good habits that will support your body towards better health and stop the bad habits that pull you towards ill-health. These can include sleep schedules, healthy eating and snacking, exercise routines, sitting postures, and getting regular Chiropractic adjustments.
  • Have a proactive approach to health. Identify areas in your life which can be better for yourself and your family, and act on them.
  • Learn what challenges your ancestors had to experience in their health or other people in your profession. Due to current research in genetics that has grown towards epigenetics, we know that if you have similar lifestyle factors as your ancestors you will run into similar health problems. However, if you develop a wellness attitude and positive lifestyle factors, you have less chance of running into the same problems.Essentially, you are not at the will of your genes!
  • Listen to your body. Your body speaks to you, but you have to listen. With regular Chiropractic care we find that patients get a better understanding of what their bodies are saying to them. Better body awareness is very important when living a wellness lifestyle.

Another way to describe Wellness that resonates with our Chiropractors at Erin Mills Optimum Health is:

“We conceptualize wellness as the generalized self perception of health. From this perspective, wellness is distinct from health-ill-ness; an individual can deem themselves to be in an acceptable state of wellness whether they experience suboptimal ‘health’ in any given domain or area of functioning” – Schuster, Dobson, Jaregui, and Blanks. Wellness Lifestyles. A theoretical framework linking wellness, health lifestyles, and complimentary and alternative medicine.

This quote describes how a “disease can be viewed as a catalyst for persons to grow, and in doing so, to heal themselves.”
Reorganizational healing: a paradigm for the advancement of wellness, behavior change, holistic practice, and healing.
Epstein DM1, Senzon SA, Lemberger D.
We see this often with our patients as we care for them and their families throughout a lifetime. Differing health challenges come throughout time and as a Chiropractor it is essential we help them patient to grow stronger through the experience of disease or injury. Having a wellness mindset allows us to see patients heal through their injuries and to grow beyond.

I look forward to helping you develop a wellness attitude and to help you improve your life physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Why Not Take Control of Your Life Towards Wellness? Chiropractic can help!

At Erin Mills Optimum Health in Mississauga all the Doctors and staff are focused on natural health and your overall wellness to live your fullest life possible.

As someone who was introduced to Chiropractic treatments in my early 20’s it was the jumping off point to my holistic and natural health approach to my overall wellness.

Since starting a family of my own I couldn’t imagine not having my son adjusted by one of our four child Chiropractors four days after his birth. Labour isn’t just work for the mom, but for the baby as well.

My husband and I wanted to give him the best start possible and since seeing the Chiropractors we have been able to keep on top of his developmental milestones and help him to grow and thrive.

Child Chiropractors have been trained to work with babies from birth and we are very fortunate at Erin Mills Optimum Health that we have four pediatric Chiropractors. It has been amazing watching my son after an adjustment and seeing him thrive once he has been aligned.

“I feel strong today Mama!”
Those were the words coming out of my daughters mouth today as we walked to the park.  This made me smile!
I am a Naturopathic Doctor in Mississauga and my daughter had been dragging her little self around for the past month with a cold and cough. I had been giving her lots of teas, herbal baths, bone Broths, warming socks- all of these naturopathic goodies were helping, but her energy still wasn’t where it normally is.
Then the amazing Dr. Cote suggested I bring my kids in for an adjustment- something that I had totally forgotten about!  Dr. Cote is one of our Mississauga Chiropractors who works with children.
My kids came in yesterday and had an excellent chiropractic “tune up”. It just so happened that when Dr. Cote assessed her, she showed that her ribs and hips were in desperate need of a chiropractic spinal adjustment.
Today I have a girl who’s got her spring back in her step and a little boy who’s nose and chest are much improved.
Thank you Dr. Cote and all of our wonderful chiropractors in Mississauga at Erin Mills!

What is Natural Health?

What is natural health?

At Erin Mills Optimum Health, “natural health” is function. It is not just about feeling good or not feeling sick. Natural health is functioning at your OPTIMUM in all aspects of life; from how your body’s physiology is working, to how you perform at home, work, and at the gym. Realize that your body has all that it needs to get to this level, it was designed to be healthy. We can help you reach that state of natural health by addressing the body from the top-down, bottom-up, and outside-in all to empower the body from the inside-out naturally.

“The doctor of the future will give no medicines, but will interest his patients in the care of human frame, in diet, and in the causes and prevention of disease.”
Thomas Edison

“Top-Down” – Your brain controls and coordinates all aspects of your body. The brain connects to the body through nerves which leave from the top (skull) and head “down” (through the spinal cord) to your body. The spine protects this cord but can interfere with the messages travelling from the “top-down”. Chiropractors check and remove this interference through specific spinal adjustments.

“The beauty about Chiropractic is the fact that it works with natural means. It puts nothing new into the body, nor does it take away any natural gland or organ. Chiropractic simply releases life forces within the body, sets free ribulets of energy over nerves, and lets nature do her work in a normal matter.”
B.J. Palmer – Developer of Chiropractic

“Bottom-Up” – You explore the world on your feet. Not only do your feet impact the mechanics of your whole spine, but they also take quite the impact when exploring. By caring for your feet our Chiropodist and Reflexologist support you towards health from the “bottom-up”.

May your feet take you where your brain wants to go.

“Outside-In” – You are exposed to daily chemicals and pollutants that your body has to detoxify, adapt to, and filter. These “outside-in” stressors need to be addressed to allow your body to reach its optimum state of function and health. Our Naturopaths are experts at taking a look at what “outside-in” stressors are challenging your body and how to support the body’s natural healing ability through foods.

Start functioning at your optimum and become your naturally healthy self – we can help.
