Your First Chiropractic Visit

What Can I Expect During Your First Chiropractic Visit
You are probably wondering what happens during your first Chiropractic visit at our office in Mississauga. The following page will help you feel at ease during your first few Chiropractic appointments.
During the first visit, one of our Chiropractors will complete a thorough exam that typically includes:
  • Patient History
  • Physical Exam
  • Possible specialty tests such as X-rays, thermography, surface EMG

During the Patient History

Prior to your initial consultation, you will be asked to fill out forms that provide the Chiropractor with some background information on your symptoms, conditions and lifestyle.

We would encourage you to fill out the patient intake form and submit it online before coming to our clinic or you can come 15 minutes prior to you initial visit and fill it out in our office.

When applicable, bring any copies of previous tests (for example, MRI or X-rays) with you.

When you meet with the Doctor he will already have reviewed your intake form and he will want to expand on the information that you provided so that he as a clear idea about your concerns.

Some of the detailed questions that may be discussed:

  • Is this a wellness check-up or do you have a specific concern?
  • Is this an acute problem that just happened or is it chronic and has been present for months or years?
  • Prior history of this condition
  • Previous falls, injuries, surgeries, car accidents etc.
  • What activities aggravate or relieve the condition (computer, sitting, driving, standing, lifting, walking, etc.)
  • What have you tried to date to relieve the condition (Medical Doctor, Physiotherapy, Massage, medications, liniments, exercises)
  • How it affects your quality of life at home, at work, sleeping, with sports, hobbies and other activities
  • about your family history

During the Physical Examination

After discussing your Patient History with you your Chiropractor will then conduct a Chiropractic Examination to evaluate your condition and develop a working diagnosis.

In most cases the exam can be performed with you wearing your normal clothing. If needed, a gown can be provided.

  • The Doctor will first palpate along your spine and supporting muscles to determine exactly where your discomfort is located.
  • He will also examine the entire spine because the primary cause of your condition may sometimes be remote from where you feel your pain.
  • Chiropractors are specially trained to detect spinal subluxations. Subluxations are misalignments of your spinal vertebrae or areas of abnormal mobility of the spinal segments. In addition to causing pain and discomfort, subluxations can irritate the nerves exiting the spine at that level. Nerve irritation can send pain down the length of the nerve and also cause abnormal function of the areas supplied by the nerve.
  • A postural assessment will be performed to see if there are any abnormal curves or imbalances.
  • Ranges of motion of your neck, back and other joints will be assessed to see if there is abnormal mobility.
  • Muscle tone and strength will be measured
  • Neurological integrity along your spine may be tested with specific reflexes.
  • In cases where X-rays are required they are performed in our office by the Chiropractor with our ‘state of the art’ digital X-ray system. The X-rays are visible immediately but the Doctor usually requires time after your appointment to fully review and study the images.
  • A MyoVision Electromyograph and Thermoscan may be performed to measure the electrical activity of the muscles along your spine.

After your examination the Doctor will review his findings with you and provide options and a treatment plan.

In most cases the Doctor will begin treatment on this first visit.
