Kegels – Not just for women
Kegels – Not just for women
Yes it’s true, kegels are not just for women! The perineum or pelvic floor are layers of muscles or can be considered the foundation that hold up your organs.
Hormone changes, including postpartum, menopause and andropause (“male” menopause”) all influence the wellbeing of the perineum. In men over 45, if your having trouble with urinary incontinence, this can be related to testosterone levels dropping.
I’ve talked about this before, but the importance of ‘kegels’ can greatly influence the strength of your muscles and help with bladder control and bowel control. It also helps with improving the tone and health of the vagina.
A very interesting study also found that vitamin D was shown to positively influence the muscles in the pelvic floor thereby strengthening them. Another reason to take this amazing vitamin.
Here are some tips when it comes to doing the ‘kegel’ for your pelvic floor:
1. When you breathe in, relax your pelvic floor
2. When you breathe out, that is when you do the ‘elevator lift up’ movement with the perineum (or pelvic floor)
3. Aim to do between 50-100/day
