Negative Thinking, Substance P And Healing With Chiropractic

Healing With Chiropractic

Most people know in this day and age that positive thinking is good for your health. As a chiropractor in Mississauga I see this in my wellness office every day. Patients who have a positive outlook respond better and faster than those who are more pessimistic – with negative thinking.

One of the reasons for that is when a person has a positive thought certain nice physical changes occur in their bodies prompted by a release of substances called neuropeptides. These neuropeptides are well known as endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine. (The feel good stuff that gives you a high after a bout of exercise)

What most people don’t know though is that negative thoughts have the exact opposite effect and the neuropeptides (one of them called substance P) released also have the opposite effects on the body. I guess we could call those the feel bad stuff you get during a bout of depression. Pain is increased, breathing is more labored, digestion is not as efficient, etc.

The reason why I am bringing this up as a chiropractor is that this mental state also affects your ability to hold an adjustment. So in fact you can participate in your recovery by controlling your thoughts and emotions.

Many patients tell me that this is easier said than done and I agree. Here are a few tricks I use for myself to overcome negative feelings and emotions:

  1. I try to avoid the news as much as possible. It is rarely positive and doesn’t serve much purpose in my daily activities.
  2. I pretend things are good on bad days until I’ve fooled my mind to think that things are ok.
  3. I plaster a smile on my face whether I feel like it or not and face people with it. The response to that is usually positive so it can turn things around for you.
  4. Keep busy. Accomplish things.
  5. Meditate

If any of you out there have tricks or strategies to change your thought processes from negative to positive please share them here to help others.

Sincerely,

Dr. Micheline Cote, Chiropractor in Mississauga at Erin Mills Optimum Health
