Reflexology Treatment

Reflexology is a type of rehabilitation that mainly deals with the many “reflex points” found in the feet, hands and ears that relate to certain organs and glands in the body. Using specific techniques; a therapist will stimulate those reflex points to promote health and vitality in the organ via the body’s energy pathways. Reflexology is known to be a profoundly relaxing treatment which can be felt throughout the entire body. Our Mississauga Massage Therapist – Sandra Dale performs our reflexology treatments.

Reflexology, According To Our Massage Therapist

The Reflexology Association of Canada defines reflexology as:

“A natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, hands, ears, and their referral areas which correspond to every part, gland, and organ of the body.”

Through application of pressure to these areas with the therapists specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques reflexology helps to:

  • relieve tension
  • improve circulation
  • helps promote the natural function of the related areas of the body

This helps to bring the body back to balance of function known as homeostasis.

Is Reflexology Covered By Insurance?

Reflexology is not under the RHPA (Regulated Health Professionals Act) and therefore is not covered by extended health insurance plans

Why Did You Become a Reflexologist?

I received my first reflexology treatment over 30 years ago and this lead me to inquire further and to learn one of the oldest forms of therapeutic care known to man. The history of reflexology dates back to 2330 BC where in the Physicians Tomb at Saqqara, Egypt, hieroglyphics depict foot massage. There is also a map of Budha’s feet detailing the corresponding areas of the body.

It is important to note that reflexology / reflexologists should not diagnose; it is used solely as an alternative treatment. Having said that, I always find it quite interesting when a person’s medical history co-relates to an area of tenderness on their feet.

One of my fondest experiences is when I was asked to give reflexology treatments at a dental convention for DAR (Dentist At Risk). This groundbreaking committee had brought in very important speakers and over the course of the weekend the dentists were leaving their lectures to receive reflexology treatments from me.

Why is Reflexology Beneficial?

Reflexology is very beneficial in conjunction with helping the body’s alignment in orthotics, chiropractic care, and massage therapy.

How Does Reflexology Work?

The patient comfortably lies on their back with their legs elevated by pillows. The patient can wear comfortable pants as long as they are able to be rolled up to the knee or the patient maybe be covered by a sheet. Reflexology sessions are 45 minutes in length with the added benefits of aromatherapy oils.

Who Can Have Reflexology?

Reflexology is safe for everybody including children, expectant mothers and the elderly. There are not many contradictions to reflexology. Reflexology however is not advised if the patients have had recent surgery, contact dermatitis, plantar warts or open cuts.
